These songs I chose because I like them, some I learnt from my first real guitar teacher, Dylan Todd, at the Guitar Centre in Palma de Mallorca in the late sixties when my family lived there; some from my father who was my other first guitar teacher; some down the years from other musicians. I have kept the accompaniments as simple as possible to go with my book The Art Of Accompaniment On The Guitar, most guitarists could handle them. I have also annotated everything, knowing the history of a song is important and as we increasingly lose the oral tradition I was brought up with the reason I chose certain verses and not others becomes relevant to that understanding. This is a simpler publication than the printed one available from Amazon. Joseph Hollings (ASCAP) is a composer, arranger and music educator, and has taught music to students of all levels for over twenty five years. His arrangements have been performed internationally, including in London's West End, and have been recorded by the Onyx Brass Quintet and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. The truly distinctive sound has ensured that the piece has continued to be played and arranged for all sorts of groups in the almost century-and-a-half since the play was first performed. This particular arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for a Mixed Clarinet Quartet: 2 Bb clarinets, 1 alto clarinet, and 1 bass clarinet. The melody stays primarily in Clarinet 1 but does jump between the top three parts and players will need to be able to play most of the range of the instrument regardless of which part they are playing. That said, most intermediate players should be able to play this piece given they have the range and it will be a challenge for less experienced players. This arrangement also available for Bb Clarinet Quartet and the sound samples for this listing come from that arrangement.
