This is the final movement from Shavano Suite, a set of four pieces inspired by folklore and campfire tales of the Maysville/Mount Shavano area in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The suite was originally scored for classical guitar duet, but this version is expanded as a concerto for guitar, string orchestra, and percussion. The percussion part requires a large drum (or timpani), glockenspiel, guiro and wind chimes.  The suite has a total performance time if 17 minutes. This movement, however, can stand alone as a concert piece, with a performance time of 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Performance demand is advanced intermediate level. Movement III is a wistful setting of JOHNNY HAS GONE FOR A SOLDIER, a song from the revolutionary war era. The piece was written for harpist Elaine Christy of Princeton University. The Princeton area saw a decisive battle during the revolution, therefore the use of JOHNNY HAS GONE FOR A SOLDIER. Grade Level 6. There are no pedal markings so that the player can mark-up the part as they see fit.

Instrumental arrangement of my classical-folk crossover setting of Prévert's poem Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau (To paint the portrait of a bird).  Prévert indicates that you can never capture the real essence of a bird. You can paint a cage, a tree branch for it to sing on, but you have to wait for the actual bird itself to enter your painting - only then can you sign your painting, using a feather from that bird. The music has a Dorian feel - ie with a minor third and seventh but often with a raised sixth - (in this case F#s in an otherwise A minor context). I have provided full score and separate parts and also the melody instrument part with chord names, to enable the guitarist to read along with the melody instrument player and opt for interpretations other than the notated version (eg strumming, rasgueado etc).
