Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was an English composer, organist and virginalist of the Elizabethan and late Jacobean periods.  Despite his early death he nevertheless produced a number of the most celebrated vocal, choral, instrumental and keyboard works of that rich period in English music.  This Pavan (later included in The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book) is the first part of the famous Pavan and Galliard (The Lord Salisbury), which has become one of his best-known compositions to have entered the present-day repertory. It has been performed and recorded many times, most notably perhaps by Glenn Gould in 1970.

A turbulent organ work depicting a vision Judas Iscariot had after betraying Jesus Christ. According to the Gospel of Judas, the latter's vision was of the disciples stoning and persecuting him. This is apparent in the extended section of violence, with its darting harmonies and virtuoso writing. A long moment of calm leads to more turmoil and Judas' eventual hanging (suicide); the final descending pedal notes depict his fall against the noose. The opening scherzo-like passage signifies Judas' initial craftiness at betraying Jesus. This quickly leads to feelings of regret and then dread - portrayed in the darkening music.
