Piano,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549571 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,World. 18 pages. Jmsgu3 #3508655. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549571). Duration: ca. 2:17 Score: 10 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 5 pages. A proven audience pleaser - perfect for a recital encore! Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and BedÅ™ich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1259272 Composed by Kurt M. Mehlenbacher. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary. Score. 16 pages. Abundant Silence #852544. Published by Abundant Silence (A0.1259272). OF SHADOWS ON THE STARS, BY KURT M. MEHLENBACHERFOR SOLO PIANO, EARLY ADVANCED, 14 PAGESOf shadows on the stars finds its name within the famed poem Sure On This Shining Night by James Agee. The poem receives a great deal of discussion on its meaning, contemplating if the words are hopeful, mourning, rife with humility, or a statement of resignation. My take on the poem is that it is of deep hope and contemplation, declaring that the world is held in the warm embrace of summer and that life if being kind. Most strikingly, though, is the last line of shadows on the stars, forming the crux of the text. It is the moment when the words change perspective from the stars casting shadows on the earth to the earth casting its shadows on the stars.Regardless of what that may mean exactly, its elegance caught me, and its inherent imagery helped guide the formation of this piece. Unlike Lauridsen or Barber–neither of whom I am claiming to bear resemblance–this work actually has no text, and is driven more from the diction and isolated events present in the text rather than an interpretation of the poem as a whole.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB divisi) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1291816 Composed by Desmond Earley. 20th Century. 21 pages. Seolta Music Limited #882398. Published by Seolta Music Limited (A0.1291816). Commissioned by All Classical Portland radio network to mark the occasion of the total solar eclipse in 2017, Body of the Moon was first recorded by Erick Vallé (vocal solo), Nancy Ives (violoncello), and Chris Whyte (percussion) with Resonance Ensemble, directed by Katherine FitzGibbon. The piece was broadcast across the Pacific Northwest of the United States as millions experienced the totality of the solar eclipse. The phenomenon of the eclipse is represented by the lyrical cello line as the choir gives voice to the words of Galileo Galilei (1564- 1642): ‘Vedere il corpo della luna/Behold the body of the moon!’ The bass drum represents the vastness of our solar system, and a lone vocal improvisation speaks to the personal experience of this magical moment. Galileo’s other phrase, ‘we had perpetual twilight and never darkness’, is a poetic description of experiencing the eerie phenomenon of a total solar eclipse. Desmond Earley’s piece captures the sense of awe fostered by witnessing such a galactic occurrence. To explore all choral titles in College Choral Series please click here.

String Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.561516 Composed by NanPa hong. Arranged by Han-Ki Kim. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Country,Instructional. Score and parts. 35 pages. Han-Ki Kim #170954. Published by Han-Ki Kim (A0.561516). “Spring of Home Country†for String Orchestra, Op. 159D “Spring of Home Country†can be said to be a work of variation in a word, and it was composed with the theme of the melody of Nanpa Hong, who played an important role in spreading Western music in Korea in the early 1900s. The nursery rhyme “Spring of Home Country†was composed in 1929 and is a familiar melody to all Koreans, young and old. The content of the poem is about the beautiful and nostalgic nostalgia of the village where I lived as a child. Following the lively prelude in 4/4 time, first violin plays the theme in an atmosphere as if reading a poem, followed by the first variation composed of splendid dispersion chords. Variations 2 and 3 are played by intersecting the parts with “Jajinmori†and “Gutgeori,†which are unique Korean rhythms. In the 4th variation, the slow-expanded theme contrasts with the fast tones of the first violin up and down. Then, the 5th Variation of the Cadenza character is played, and the final 6th Variation of the majestic character and a short coda decorate the end. In this score, short sentences suitable for the musical situation were also written in the score, so that the performer could feel the Korean sentiment in a more concrete way. YouTube link is just for a reference. it is played by concerto form.

Small Ensemble Harpsichord,Organ,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.913678 Arranged by Clay Boland, Jr. Folk,Traditional. Score and parts. 56 pages. BOLAND MUSIC LLC, P.O. BOX 493, CARBONDALE, CO 81623 #6880017. Published by BOLAND MUSIC LLC, P.O. BOX 493, CARBONDALE, CO 81623 (A0.913678). The piano scores used for the original sheet music of these folk songs, hymns, and spirituals of the 1800’s were purposely made simple in order to sell as many copies as possible. The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc. Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s. Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments. These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern. For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes. You can see and hear the music for most of these contemporary arrangements on Sheet Music Plus and some also on YouTube. And if you wish to play and/or sing along alone or with your friends or family, please do so. Happy time travel!!!
