This beautiful song, arranged here for solo piano, deserves to be much better known. It dates from 1900 and was performed at a British promenade concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1906. The song was republished in 1932 in the News-Chronicle Music for the Home, a collection of popular classical pieces edited by the composer. As a champion of musical performance, Landon Ronald intended this volume to encourage home music-making. The habit of listening to music instead of performing it...is so deeply to be deplored he wrote in the preface. It is up to all music-lovers to do what they can to prevent it from spreading... Brahms wrote this piece (Op. 56) in the summer of 1873, first for two pianos then as an orchestral work. It is well-known for its unique five-measure phrasing of the chorale, which is used throughout the piece. Brahms kept this basic structure while developing the material in each variation, creating ten related-but-separate musical gems. This works out well for brass players, as individual variations range from just under a minute to just over three minutes for the finale. The piece is a joy to perform. The variations can be combined at will to fit performer skills for recitals, concerts and contests. Played in its entirety, Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is a striking concert showpiece with a typical performance time of 17:50. This third edition of the arrangement has uses a new font, clarifies some accidentals, and improves the part layouts. Difficulty level for the piece varies between Medium and Medium-Advanced. A listen to the sound-file alongside the music for sale should show that the result is restful and fun to play.Dynamics are suggested that mirror the original (with choir, organ and full orchestra) but the fingering are yours to choose - just make sure you make the performance yours...I hope you enjoy performing this!
