Rachmaninov's beautiful All-night Vigil (aka Songs of the Church) is rarely performed because of its level of difficulty, language, and length. The music is transcendent and perfectly suited for celebrations of the Presentation of the Lord (February 2), evening prayer, and funerals. This selection, No. 5 of 15 in the work, is taken from the 1920 English translation by Winfred Douglas and is well-suited as a solo piece. The choral parts were easily translated into an accompaniment on organ, although piano can be used. The movement is transposed down a minor third and is suited for a tenor (the original solo voice called for in the work) or soprano. This arrangement is also available in Bb minor (original key) and E minor for lower voices. This piece would also work as a unison choir piece.

While there is no theme that connects them to one another, they are all in the key of E Major and consist mostly of a waltz-like feeling. I. Remembrance of a Dream is the first movement, characterised by its sonata form and distinct, contrasting sections. The piece paints a story of dancing lovers before they are forced to give their final goodbyes.

The Hand of You is an arrangement of the 1920 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond.  The lyrics are a tender love story about how throughout our relationship everything is fine as long as I can touch the hand of you.  In order to emphasize this simple and powerful emotion, for the first verse I simplified the original ballad's thick chords into a more shaped and expressive two part writing, just single notes in each hand; then for the second verse I did a reharmonization of the melody, adding some simple harmony and octaves for the climax; then back to two part for a slower, softer ending.   I also wrote a new slow introductory section with my own lyrics and melody that is based on what follows.  An incredibly beautiful piece, this is perfect for any wedding today, whether vintage or modern.  4 page score; 2:15 minutesI have published it in 3 different vocal ranges on this site:  High - low E to high F; Medium - middle C to high D; Low - low A to high B.   The MP3 recording is of the Medium Voice version.  This piece is also found in my book, Vintage Wedding Songs, a collection of 5 songs which is also available on this site.

I’ve suggested that this piece grows in volume throughout the 3 verses that I’ve arranged, and to support this, the number of notes each part has gradually increases, so that the notes have less time to die away before they are replaced. So part of the build in volume happens automagically!There are no page turns. The soundfile alongside the score is from the 3rd verse where you can hear that the sound is becoming busy and powerful. They are a contemporary arrangement of selected movements from the Five Wind Divertimentos for 3 basset horns, K. 439b which Mozart wrote in 1783.The Divertimentos are notable for their conciseness of form and their melodic richness. (Each divertimento has 5 movements.)They therefore make an excellent introduction to Mozart's piano music, even though they are not completely typical of Mozart's piano writing. We do not know for certain who made the arrangement, but Alexander Weinmann has shown that it was probably Ferdinand Kauer. The order of movements is not the same as in the original; moreover, some of the Trios have been exchanged and recapitulations have been shortened in some instances.This is my arrangement for wind quintet of Viennese Sonatina No.4 in Bb The original 3 parts have been reallocated around the quintet, with some octave and harmony additions.I have added an original natural horn part for a more authentic Mozart sound.
