The third movement of Suite Bergamasque composed by Debussy around 1890 and published in 1905, the piece was inpired by the 1869 poem of the same name by Paul Verlaine.

Your soul is a chosen landscape
On which masks and Bergamasques cast enchantment as they go,
Playing the lute, and dancing, and all but
Sad beneath their fantasy-disguises.

Singing all the while, in the minor mode,
Of all-conquering love and life so kind to them
They do not seem to believe in their good fortune,
And their song mingles with the moonlight,
 
With the calm moonlight, sad and lovely,
Which makes the birds dream in the trees,
And the plumes of the fountains weep in ecstasy,
The tall, slender plumes of the fountains among the marble sculptures.

DeBussy's piece captures the tranquility and passionate Romantisism of the poem with one of his most famous works. 

The arrangement captures the rich vibrance and expression of the original piano piece while adding new hints of modernism and tone color.

Debussy originally wrote this piece in 1890 (L.69).  It was first published as Tarantelle Styrienne in 1891.  He later revised it and republished it in 1903 as Danse.  After Debussy's death, the great Maurice Ravel arranged it for full orchestra.

This arrangement is for String Orchestra, based mostly off Ravel's orchestration, but also the piano part in some places where the harp that Ravel wrote in is unplayable by strings, whereas the piano part isn't.  Overall the intention is to retain as much as possible the texture and dynamic of the orchestral version in a string orchestra setting.

This is the 10th Prelude of Volume 1 of Debussy’s Preludes for piano.

This piece depicts the rising of a submerged cathedral. It is derived from a Breton myth. The cathedral, according to legend, rises from the sea off the coast of the Island of Ys on clear mornings. After it’s entrance, the cathedral sinks back into the sea. This is a striking example of what is considered musical impressionism – the allusion to an image.

Golliwogg's Cakewalk is one of the six movements by Debussy from the Children's Corner, originally for piano. The arrangement requires good individual rhythmic security on the part of the performers  since the parts often dovetail where the piano range would allow for an entire passage to be performed. Unlike so may other of Debussy impressionistic works, this has  a real jazzy feel that compliments the cakewalk dance. .

Whether is written as an impression of a specific painting or other work of art, it is a noble and elegant work.

 

A saraband is a court dance from the 17th and 18th centuries. Set exclusively in triple meter, the dance requires a slower tempo. Debussy was drawn to older forms and sonorities, always recasting them with his unique melodic and harmonic language.

Debussy's unfinished Chinese Ballet was projected for première in London, but was never finished. The work was complete and orchestrated by the Debussy Scholar Robert Orledge and recorded in 2016 for the Paris City of LIghts Festival in the United Kingdom. Scored for large orchestra (3(pic)2EH2BsCl3(CBN)/4331/timp/5perc/cel/hp/pno/strings), mixed chorus and narrator, the ballet is suitable for both theatrical and concert performances. The famous Golliwogg’s Cakewalk is the final piece from Debussy's cycle Children’s Corner which consists of 6 miniatures for piano, written for his daughter in the years 1906-1908. The style corresponds to that of ragtime, a dance which was in vogue around the turn of the century. In the middle section, he parodies several times the beginning of the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner with whom Debussy had a rather ambiguous relationship. The present arrangement now allows musicians to play the popular movement in a version for melodic instrument with accompaniment.

Debussy composed Syrinx, a breathtaking unaccompanied work in 1913. It became the first solo work for the Böhm Flute and the first solo work by a major composer since C.P.E. Bach, almost 150 years earlier.

The music allows wide latitude for interpretation and will show off the musical imagination of the performer.

The great French Flautist Marcel Moyse is credited with adding phrasing and bar lines to his friend Debussy's new work.

In classical mythology, Syrinx was a nymph and a follower of Artemis, known for her chastity. Pursued by the amorous Greek god Pan, she ran to a river’s edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In answer, she was transformed into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god’s frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thereafter known as Syrinx.

This work of just over two minutes for advanced performers will add a new dimension to your recital, as it is often performed offstage.
