The arrangement requires good individual rhythmic security on the part of the performers  since the parts often dovetail where the piano range would allow for an entire passage to be performed. Unlike so may other of Debussy impressionistic works, this has  a real jazzy feel that compliments the cakewalk dance. .

It is derived from a Breton myth. The cathedral, according to legend, rises from the sea off the coast of the Island of Ys on clear mornings. After it’s entrance, the cathedral sinks back into the sea.   This is a striking example of what is considered musical impressionism – the allusion to an image.   This arrangement by Richard Byrnes is for 9 Violins, 4 Celli, Bass, & Contrabassoon.   In addition to works by Debussy, we offer works by J.S. However, it's not easy to play since there are 5 flats in the key signature, and it's written in 9/8, which means 9 eighth notes per measure. The modified version is in C Major, no flat, no sharp, and it's in 3/4. It's shorter, and easier to play. In addition, I added detailed fingerings. It's good for beginners who want to play Debussy with the minimum technique.

It is in the style of a Cakewalk, a dance developed in the late 19th century at get-togethers on slave plantations in the southern United States. The music is based on Edward Lavine, a famous vaudeville performer whose act was presented at the Marigny Theatre around the same time. It is the only work by Debussy composed as a musical portrait for a human personality. The music of about 3 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.
