He was its leading musical exponent and a seminal influence on modern music. The aim of Impressionism was to reflect mood, which Debussy did with the use of unusual chords and modes which nevertheless progress unerringly through evocative landscapes to peaks of tension. Careful attention to form gives impalpable sentiments a sense of direction and completion. The excerpt 'Golaud's Letter' from early in Debussy's only opera, the hugely influential ‘Pelleas and Melisande’, demonstrates this, and exhibits his masterful expression of mood and drama. Exquisite without being flowery, forceful but not overblown, the Letter's spoken voice recitative style is a natural accompaniment to the Letter's contents, while it accentuates the arrival of cadences.

The piece is based on the 7-tone scala enigmatica used by Giuseppe Verdi in his Ave Maria (1889, first from Quattro Pezzi Sacri) and its complement (the missing 5 notes), treated as twelve-tone field. Do you find it? The Schubertango was composed in Bremen (Germany) on 28 November 2014 and has a duration of 1 minute. Arabesque and Danse bohémienne are two lovely early piano works of Claude Debussy that arranger Ralph Sauer has melded together into a suite for Tuba or Bass Trombone and Piano appropriate for moderately advanced performers.Arabesque is number 1 of two that the composer wrote between 1888 and 1891. It is one of the very early impressionist pieces of music. Debussy seems to wander through modes and keys and achieves evocative scenes throughout. (Wikipedia)Danse bohémienne is his earliest work for piano from 1880, written while the composer was acting as house pianist for Tchaikovsky's patroness, Nadezhad von Meck. It is a rhythmic and energetic work that was not published until after Debussy's death.

Debussy added just a very little while arranging, but what he did add makes a big difference in how well these two pieces work for a woodwind quartet. The 3,1 in the title refer to Debussy's reversing the order deliberately to make the music flow better when using only two of the pieces. John Gibson used this setting for his woodwind quartet that includes flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, and bassoon.

La plus que lente (The more than slow) is a waltz for solo piano written by Claude Debussy in 1910. The piece debuted at the New Carlton Hotel in Paris, where it was transcribed for strings and performed by the popular 'gipsy' violinist, Léoni, for whom Debussy wrote it. Debussy arranged the piece for small orchestra (flute, clarinet, piano, cimbalom and strings) which was published in 1912. This arrangement for brass quintet is challenging and virtuos for all players with an especially rewarding trumpet part.
