Prelude Nr. 8, ``The Girl with the Flaxen Hair´´ is the 8th piece in Debussy's 1st Book of Preludes.It is known for it's musical simplicity, and although it is one of the most recorded of Debussy's works it remains popular with Audiences. Parts include - Strings, Flute (2), Oboe (2), B flat Clarinet (2), Bass Clarinet, Bassoon (2), Horn in F (2), and Harp. Debussy composed this breathtaking unaccompanied work in 1913, and it became the first solo work for the Böhm flute and the first solo work by a major composer since C.P.E. Bach almost 150 years earlier! The music allows wide latitude for interpretation and can really show off the musical imagination of the performer. The great French flautist Marcel Moyse is credited with adding phrasing and barlines to his friend Debussy's new work.  In classical mythology, Syrinx was a nymph and a follower of Artemis, known for her chastity. Pursued by the amorous Greek god Pan, she ran to a river’s edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In answer, she was transformed into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god’s frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thereafter known as syrinx. This work of 2 1/2 minutes for advanced performers can add a new dimension to your recital, as it is often performed offstage.

It is in the style of a Cakewalk, a dance developed in the late 19th century at get-togethers on slave plantations in the southern United States. The music is based on Edward Lavine, a famous vaudeville performer whose act was presented at the Marigny Theatre around the same time. It is the only work by Debussy composed as a musical portrait. The music of about 3 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Debussy originally wrote this piece in 1890 (L.69).  It was first published as Tarantelle Styrienne in 1891.  He later revised it and republished it in 1903 as Danse.  After Debussy's death, the great Maurice Ravel arranged it for full orchestra.This arrangement is for String Orchestra, based mostly off Ravel's orchestration, but also the piano part in some places where the harp that Ravel wrote in is unplayable by strings, whereas the piano part isn't.  Overall the intention is to retain as much as possible the texture and dynamic of the orchestral version in a string orchestra setting.
