He was an Italian composer, string player and choirmaster. A composer of both secular and sacred music, and a pioneer in the development of opera, he is considered a crucial transitional figure between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods of music history. After the loss of his wife and subsequent years of depression, Monteverdi found his own renaissance in the Basilica of Venice as their music director. He invented opera and poured himself into church music, eventually becoming a member of a monastic order after surviving the plague. His exquisite small pieces were a great part of his complete works. As he aged, they reflected his journey through the stages of faith.
