This piece was written as part of the 2018 Composing In The Wilderness workshop and reflects our journey down the Koyukuk River in arctic Alaska.It is written in three movements: Mvt. I - Grey-Green Sandstone and a Bitter Current: the beginning of our journey; the roaring, bitterly cold water, the colossal mountains, the sandstone river pebbles, and even the clouds all seemed to be a stormy hue of grey-green. Mvt. II - Mica and Quartz: calmer waters further south, where pulverized mica shimmered in the sunlit river, and massive veins of milky quartz streaked the cliffs. Mvt. III - Petrified Wood: the boreal forest, where chunks of ancient, unbreakable petrified wood and infigo granite dotted the black sand beaches, while layers of exposed permafrost showed thousands of years of history.Written for flute (concert and alto), clarinet (Bb and bass), violin, cello, and percussion.

(I have a way of notating a melody very quickly so that I don’t lose music in such situations.) Until I sat down to do the first recording of this music, Water in a Dry Land was still just the little waltz. But while the music expressed all the longing for water that we here in the dry land feel, it didn’t actually have any water in it, and as soon as I started recording I wanted some watery music to be there. So I made up the middle section, which seems to me to be quite watery, and practiced it and thought I was done. Then the next time we recorded it, on listening to the playback, all of a sudden I wanted to hear the dry land! That was the genesis of the opening chords, which repeat after the middle (water) section. I was still refining (that is, re-writing) this music up to the very day I recorded it!Advanced: a challenging piece that offers many contrasts of mood and style. Architectural in its structure, with sections depicting the sandstone cliffs of New Mexico, the earth’s longing for water, and the welcome blessing of gentle rains.

This is a beautiful golden oldie from 1929 resurrected by Sting in 1982 and used in the film Brimstone and Treacle. I have made a Stride piano arrangement and taken it through two keys Eb and E major. It should be played in a lively and cheerful manner. It is a fun song but still quite nostalgic.The stride left hand can be quite tricky and any 10ths can be replaced by either single notes or octaves depending on your hand size. I haven't notated fingering, pedal or dynamics as no two piano teachers would ever agree on these and I prefer to leave it to the discretion of the individual pianist. Please note this is sheet music for a piano solo and doesn't contain notation from the other instruments used on my youtube channel (Bass Guitar etc).It's a lovely tune and I hope you have as much fun playing it as I did arranging it.

The song Spread a Little Happiness was originally written for the 1929 West End musical 'Mr Cinders'.  In the 1980s, it was covered by UK musician Sting and used in the soundtrack of the film version of the Dennis Potter play Brimstone and Treacle.  Amongst other things, the song has also featured in a butter advertisement and as the theme tune for a radio series.This arrangement for mixed woodwind trio of flute (or oboe), clarinet and bassoon is ideal as background music for birthday or anniversary celebrations, especially those in which the key personnel are of the generation to be familiar with the tune.For added flexibility, a bass clarinet alternative to the bassoon part is included in the set.
