Kayla Roth #6711195. Published by Kayla Roth (A0.927035). This piece was written as part of the 2018 Composing In The Wilderness workshop and reflects our journey down the Koyukuk River in arctic Alaska. It is written in three movements: Mvt. I - Grey-Green Sandstone and a Bitter Current: the beginning of our journey; the roaring, bitterly cold water, the colossal mountains, the sandstone river pebbles, and even the clouds all seemed to be a stormy hue of grey-green. Mvt. II - Mica and Quartz: calmer waters further south, where pulverized mica shimmered in the sunlit river, and massive veins of milky quartz streaked the cliffs. Mvt. III - Petrified Wood: the boreal forest, where chunks of ancient, unbreakable petrified wood and infigo granite dotted the black sand beaches, while layers of exposed permafrost showed thousands of years of history.Written for flute (concert and alto), clarinet (Bb and bass), violin, cello, and percussion.
