Götterdämmerung is the last in Richard Wagner's cycle of four epic music dramas titled Der Ring des Nibelungen. It received its premiere at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on 17 August 1876, as part of the first complete performance of the whole work.

It featured at the end of the 1981 John Boorman film 'Excalibur' when Sir Percival reluctantly throws 'Excalibur' to the Lady of the Lake and King Arthur dies.

This arrangement is for brass band - and I have to say, it was rather difficult to make if fit and work properly! I hope you like the final outcome of my endeavours.

I wrote this as part of a Wedding Suite I composed back in 2005, and to be honest, I'd forgotten all about it and it's never been played, whereas the other two movements have been! One of the movements is now published as 'The Love That We Share' by Musikverlag-Frank. This is a big, bright fanfare suitable for any occasion - not too short, and definitely not too long! I've rewritten it here in 2022 and added some big percussion. It'd make a great opener for any concert, but would equally work for special occasions outdoors.

This popular melody was composed by Charles Henry Purday in the 19th Century, but the popular hymn is attributed to J B Dykes and is known as 'Sandon'. He extended it into the well-known verison often featured at funeral services in the United Kingdom. This version features a rendition of 'The Last Post' bugle call after a modulation to Bb.

Arranged as a commission from the British Scouting movement several years ago, this march by Harry Stafford is dedicated to my Godfather Pete Johnson who sadly died a few years ago. He was a very senior figure in the scouting movement, and dedicated his later life to the movement. The Mortimer Scout Hut where he was based has gone from a ramshakle old shed to a purpose-built building commensurate with his commitment. Pete was a World War 2 Royal Marine veteran having being involved with the D-Day landings – of which he rarely spoke, and was a well-known figure in his home village – often maintaining the church grounds. He was presented with an award by Her Majesty the Queen for his work with the scouting movement. He was also one of those presented with the ‘Legion D’Honeur’ medal when they were issued.

A very interesting yet quite sad tale goes with this song. An elderly gentleman got in touch and asked if I could write down a Christmas Carol he’d composed. I agreed, and had several visits with him when he sang the carol he’d composed. I wrote it all down, and produced this brass band version (and a vocal one) for him. He came to our band one night to hear what I’d done, and was visibly moved. Sadly, he passed away very soon after this, but at least his daughter Wendy had her carol. It’s a very traditional carol, yet with differences, and would add a new edge to any Christmas concert.

This is a patriotic war-time ‘sing-along’ piece I wrote in 2013 for one of the Exeter ‘Classics Galore!’ concerts held annually at Exeter University Great Hall. Fantastic concerts these – featuring not only a top quality local orchestra, but the SW Comms Band (Lympstone) as well. An ever so slightly 'tongue in cheek' humorous version of this work from Handel's 'Messiah'. It uses a quartet of soloists including Solo Cornet, Tenor Horn, Euphonium and EE Bass. The piece is suitable for Christmas concerts, and indeed the major work is normally performed at this festive time. The cymbals player stands with his cymbals at the ready throughout the whole piece but doesn't actually get to play them..! The trombones get a laugh too. The whole thing requires the band to 'act up' somewhat, and the score and parts have instructions on what to do and when...!

This is my composition entitled 'The Jewel of Chaos'. I've changed the image I've used too as I didn't realise the original one had 'super heroes' in it! It incorporates a tune called 'The Somerset Wassail' which it opens with, but it is played around with later in the piece. I'm very pleased with - it's a major piece of work, and think it will make a great concert piece for brass bands of intermediate standard.

The British Grenadiers is a traditional marching song of British, Australian and Canadian military units whose badge of identification features a grenade, the tune of which dates from the 17th century. It is the Regimental Quick March of the Royal Artillery (since 1716), Corps of Royal Engineers (since 1787), the Honourable Artillery Company (since 1716), Grenadier Guards 'The First (later 'Grenadier') Regiment of Foot Guards' (since 1763), and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (since 1763). It is also an authorised march of the Royal Australian Artillery, The Royal Gibraltar Regiment, The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, The Royal Regiment of Canada, The Princess Louise Fusiliers, and The 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. The standard orchestration for the military band was approved in 1762, when the Royal Artillery Band (initiated in 1557) became recognised officially, and for all other 'grenade' regiments in 1763, when the remaining unofficial bands gained official status. The march is often used on Horesguards Parade and at many royal engagements by the British Army.
