Brass Quintet Euphonium,Flugelhorn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1050020 Composed by Robert Nathaniel Dett. Arranged by Richard Decker. 20th Century,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,Spiritual,World. 23 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #654420. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1050020). Early 20th century Canadian-American composer, conductor and pianist Robert Nathaniel Dett's Listen to the Lambs choral anthem combines his neo-romantic style and advocacy for spirituals in this engaging arrangement for brass quintet. Director of the Hampton Institute, Dett developed the college's choir with his compositions and conducting into one of the leading choirs in the nation.  Always looking to improve his compositional capabilities, Dett studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. This brass quintet arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets (alternate C trumpet parts included), horn in F (alternate flugelhorn substitute part), trombone and tuba. The recording is of the entire edition. “The Music of Black Composers Series is a welcome and timely addition to the brass repertoire. Interesting music, expertly arranged, fun to perform, and well received by audiences. These pieces are now permanently in my quintet book and I will be using them with my student groups as well. Highly recommended!†  Wesley Nance, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman School of Music“I was so pleased to see the great works arranged for brass ensemble by Charles Decker Music Press especially the Music of Black Composers’ Series. Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.596552 Composed by Juan María Solare. Concert,Contemporary,Instructional,World. 20 pages. Juan Maria Solare #4598385. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.596552). Ölflecke auf dem Wasser ( Oil spots on the water )This is my second Wind Quintet. The first one (Strange preludes and double canon) was written in 1992, this one in 2003 and there are numerous sketches (even complete movements) for a third one.The title Oil spots on the water doesn't have much with ecological issues, but rather with those abstract, colourful, poly-semantic shapes of small oil spots on asphalt, especially when it rains. The Wind Quintet Ölflecke auf dem Wasser was selected in 2003 in a shortlist of 31 among 270 compositions for the project Neue Kammermusik für Musikschulen (New chamber music for music schools) by the Verband deutscher Musikschulen (Association of German Schools of Music) in Bonn, Germany. In October 2004 this piece, together with two other pieces by the same composer, received first prize at the Bremer Komponistenwettweberb organised by the Council of the Music (Landsmusikrat) in Bremen, Germany.Ölflecke auf dem Wasser was first performed on 10th July 2004 at the Castle Sonderhausen in Germany by the Wind Quintet of the Music School Carl Schroeder of Sonderhausen: Eva-Maria Albrecht (flute), Malte Schneegaß (oboe), Antje Eckstein (clarinet) Julia Wallis (bassoon), Manuela Hirsch (horn), Stephan Uhl (conductor); in the cycle Neue Musik in alten Residenzen (New Music in old residencies) of the Council of the Music Thüringen. After the premiere, Stephan Uhl published an article about the piece: Juan María Solares 'Ölflecke auf dem Wasser' (2003) für Bläserquintett. Anregungen zur Praxisarbeit zwischen Interpretation und Improvisation (Oil spots on the water (2003) by Juan María Solare: Ideas about rehearsal practice between performance and improvisation). This article was published in November 2004 in the book Ensembleleitung Neue Kammermusik (Dokumentation und Arbeitshilfe des Modellprojekts), edited by the VdM (Verband deutscher Musikschulen - Association of German Music Schools), Bonn, ISBN 3-925574-59-X, pages 82-86.In March 2005 Oil spots on the water was chosen in the shortlist at the Piece of the Year Competition organised by Alan Taylor and the London Chamber Group. In this context it was performed on 10th July 2005 at a venue unknown to the composer.

Strings Flute,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1256762 By Alec Keith, Matt Weiss, Octava Chamber Orchestra. By David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,21st Century. Full Performance. Duration 628. David Warin Solomons #850134. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1256762). Performed here by Alec Keith (flute), Matt Weiss (violin) and the Octava Chamber Orchestra under guest conductor Ian AlvarezWesterly is inspired by the old English folk song Westron Wynde and by the Renaissance masses based on that folk songIt is an expanded version of Celebration originally written for James Pellerite and his North American Native flute [NAF]In order to make the piece accessible to a wider range of performers this version uses a concert flute, with wider range and with just a few of the NAF decorations, and the violin solo part has also been expanded, resulting in a miniature Double Concerto. Westerly uses four distinct themes and weaves them into a joyful whole. The flute soloist introduces himself with the traditional call of the North American Native flute (a repeated minor third phrase), which reappears from time to time in the rest of the piece, and then embarks upon a sort of jig in E flat major (second theme). The violin soloist copies these flute phrases but then introduces the third theme of the work in the related key of C minor, and the string orchestra comes in. This third tune is based on the old Westron Wynde melody but it uses an unusual rhythm (3 3 2) and the excitement gradually begins to mount. So the two soloists rhapsodise on the various tunes and permutations along with the orchestral strings, mixing the various tunes together. In due course the fourth theme comes in, and it is quite surprising how it fits in with the E flat major - C minor interplay, since it is merely a 12 tone row. It follows some of the traditions of the 20th Century atonal composers, but, due to the context in which it is set, it takes on a warmth seldom found in atonal music.
