This is a simple and straight-forward arrangement of Amazing Grace for three flutes (or oboe). The arrangement has an intro, plays through the melody twice, each with a bit of varying accompaniment, then concludes softly at the end. This arrangement is a great foray into chamber music for younger players. It also works alongside the same arrangement for other instruments (i.e. clarinet, trombone, etc).The music would be great for developing chamber music with younger players (though it is also a great set piece for older players as well...especially at a gig where a bunch of music is needed), possibly within a band program or a flute or oboe studio. In addition to learning to play in a small group with no conductor, there is ample opportunity for phrasing and extra musical development.

Louis Adolphe Mayeur (1837 - 1894), was a Belgium clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and conductor who spent most of his musical career in France; Entering the French Military in 1855, he was a clarinetist in the Second Régiment of the Cuirassiers (Mounted Calvary) of the Garde Impériale. A student of Klosé at the Paris Conservatory, he received his First Prize in Clarinet in 1860. One of the inner circle of Adolphe Sax (along with fellow Belgiums Jules Demersseman and Jean-Baptiste Singelée, whose “Quartet for Saxophones“ was premièred with Mayeur playing and Demersseman conducting), Mayeur took up the saxophone and was quickly engaged as the saxophone soloist in the Opera House of Brussels, La Monnaie (the Mint). Sax commissioned a number of works from Mayeur for the saxophone, which were published by his company and used in his class at the Paris Conservatory.By 1871, Mayeur was also named Saxophone Solo with the Paris Opera, performing in opears and ballets by Halévy, Meyerbeer, Thomas, Saint-Saens, Massenet,   Délibes and Paladlihe. It would appear that sometime during this period, his relations with Sax became difficult, culminating in his publications of works by Buffet-Crampon, one of Sax’s rival companies and one of the main protagonists in the series of lawsuits which led to Sax’s bankrupcy. Mayeur’s own declining health lead to his death in 1894.The Grande Fantaisie de Concert sur Rigoletto dates from 1877. The contrasting sections use motifs from arias and duets from Verdi’s opera. Florid cadenzas seperate the various sections, but those passages should be played in the manner of “bel cantoâ€� ornamentation, always lyrical and songlike.  This is the score and solo part only for the concert band version. Versions are available from Musik Fabrik for piano, for Symhony Orchestra (on rental : 2222/2000/Timp/hp/strings) and for Concert Band (for sale). Grace is a piano version of the second movement of a larger Concerto for soprano saxophone and orchestra.  It is a highly ornamented adagio that is harmonically and expressively rooted in the tradition of the jazz standard.  The entire Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Orchestra was completed in 2012 for saxophonist Susan Fancher. The project was supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resorces, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The work is in three movements, entitled Groove, Grace, and Burn. The first movement takes inspiration from electronic, pop and hip-hop worlds, and features a cadenza played over the top of looped orchestral parts. The third movement is a flashy tour-de-force that fully displays the technical virtuosity of the soloist. Overall, the Concerto continues my interest in developing pieces in close collaboration with stellar performers, so that the composition is imbued with aspects of the musicality, performance abilities and personality of the dedicatee. Susan Fancher is set to give the first performance of the entire work on April 15, 2012 with conductor Ligia Amadio and the Symphonic Orchestra of the University of Sao Paulo in Sala Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Amen. - St. Francis of Assisi's Prayer before the Crucifix NOTES from the composer: One year ago, I had the privilege of participating in the Leadership Pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome (2011) sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Franciscan Healthcare, and Viterbo University.  I carried with me, not only the responsibility of bringing back a hint of Francis’ lived experience to my students, but the desire to compose something wholly Franciscan. The San Damiano Cross is one of the most distinctive Franciscan images we have on campus.  The gentle Jesus that hangs on this 12th-century icon will forever be linked to Francis’ dramatic step from citizen to sainthood-welcoming his earnest prayer to enlighten the darkness of his heart.  The Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi holds both the San Damiano Cross and the remains of his confidante, St. Clare.  It seemed a good place to start getting serious. Copying the prayer in at least six different languages, I tucked it away in my travel books, not digging it out again until the following summer (2012).  The opening phrases in the piece came easily enough (Altissimo, glorioso Dio), but I stumbled through a handful of ideas before coming up with the mantra (illumine le tenebre…).  It made sense that Francis would joyfully address God singing forte (Altissimo and Signore), while quietly chanting his humble prayers for faith, hope, charity, and knowledge. The friendship between Francis and Clare can’t be missed, not only in the intermingling of SATB voices, but in the setting of che faccia lo tuo santo e verace comadamento (that I may carry out your holy and true command).  The phrase is sung only once by the women before the final return of the illumine chant (which is repeated throughout by the men).  Maybe I chanced on weaving some of Clare’s courage with Francis’ persistence into Illumina le tenebre, all while trying to compose something wholly Franciscan?   ---Mary Ellen Haupert, October 2012.

I keep updated on all things astronomical. Though I likely won't live to see it, I greatly look forward to mankind's inevitable exploration of deep space and other galaxies. An aphelion is defined as the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun. This phenomenon was the inspiration for this concert piece for two horns and string orchestra (or piano). The work begins starkly, with just the horns playing by themselves before a single string drone enters. This is the light of the sun a long ways away. The piece then takes us on a few adventures as it begins its revolution around the sun. The piece ends warmly as we arrive at perihelion (the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun). Aphelion for two horns and string orchestra was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to the Chech American Horn Duo (Steven Gross and Jiri Havlik) and the Symphony of the Vines, Greg Magie, conductor, who premiered the piece in January of 2018.
