Options abound in this flexible arrangement: it stands alone for handbell choir, but also offers optional parts for organ and/or trumpet. If desired, this setting may be used to accompany the choir/congregation in singing the hymn from your hymnal of choice. The repeats within the piece are designed to accommodate congregational singing, and a provision is made for additional repeats if more stanzas are desired. The repeats may be omitted when singers are not involved. Each stanza offers a new texture before returning to the joyful refrain.

Here is the lead sheet version of “The Leaves Around Me Falling�, as heard on my YouTube channel and in many funeral playlists. This version is in E minor to make it easier to play. It works well as a solo or congregational song for any autumn or funeral service, featuring the meaningful lyrics of Henry Francis Lyte reminding us of the swiftness of this life, and the hope we have for the life beyond.

The original hymn was very beautiful but I thought a minor setting would be more fitting for the solemn lyrics, so I wrote an entirely new melody and harmonic arrangement, which can be found on all streaming platforms as well as Youtube, where lyric videos of this and other songs are readily available for church or personal use. 

Not just a hymn for September and October, I've found myself going back to this song often, as it captures the rich beauty and yet sadness of the autumn season, and still somehow brings comfort amidst the fast-changing seasons of the earth and of our lives. I hope you also are blessed by this song and arrangement!

Commissioned by the Jefferson Park Congregational Church UCC and first performed by them. It takes some work but the response from the congregation was well worth it.

This flexible arrangement of the tune LANCASHIRE is given two titles, one for Easter and the other for general use during the church year. All the instrumental and vocal parts are optional, so it can stand on its own as a handbell piece. After a fanfare introduction, stanza 1 is scored for congregation and SATB choir. Stanza 2 begins with the women singing, then the men sing midway through. A brief interlude leads into Stanza 3, which includes a choral descant. A reproducible congregational page is provided for each hymn text.
