Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation.  The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. The introduction begins in a somewhat solemn nature, building in tension and then in repose where it introduces the hymn Savior Like A Shepherd Lead Us. The texture is in a traditional harmonization with the tune in the first violin where it gives over to the cello on the chorus with gentle punctuations in the upper voices. An imitative motif serves as a transition progresses leading into He Leadeth Me with the tune in the cello. The violin takes over with a modified tune and then in a fughetta-like series of entrances leads into a modulation where the cello expresses the tune with the upper voices accompanying with moving rhythms. The tune of All The Way My Savior Leads Me is presented by the viola with a violin obbligato overhead leading into a full ensemble with rich and moving harmonies. A change of meters gives way to a change of counterpoint and God Leads Us Along. Here, it moves amongst the various parts and gives way to sweet release.

This arrangement of the classic Christmas tune, originally written for the musical, Meet Me in St Louis, is sweet, whimsical and dabbles in jazzy. The duo uses a number of seven chords and dissonances that resolve pleasantly in traditional harmonies. The violin carries the melody, while also filling in some rich counter melodies and chords, and the viola fills in a walking bass line with fun rhythms and chords that spice up the arrangement. There are a number of instances of 2 against 3, (duple and triple rhythms coexisting). The end of the piece sees the viola soloing on the melody for a few measures before the violin joins and the two parts play double stops to resolve in 4-part harmonies.
