This is an approachable arrangement with some third position passage writing in violin 1, viola and cello parts. Perfect for carol services and Christmas performances.

The arrangement also includes an optional easy part for Violin & Viola suitable for ABRSM grade 1-2 level.

Harp and piano parts are included but are optional for performance.

About the arranger

Tim Crooks trained as a violinist and violist, working professionally in Manchester (UK) for many years. He was a founding member of the Manchester String Quartet and scored many arrangements for the group's recordings. Tim now orchestrates and conducts, working with orchestras including Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia.

The Coventry Carol originates from a medieval mystery play entitled The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The play depicts the Christmas story, from the Annunciation (where the Angel Gabriel appears to Mary), to the Massacre of the Innocents (where King Herod of Judea orders the death of all male infants near Bethlehem under the age of two).

It is this tale that the Coventry Carol depicts, taking the form of a lullaby sung by the mothers of the murdered children. As is appropriate, the music is in a minor key – this arrangement uses G minor and D minor as a homage to well-known harmonisations by Thomas Sharp and Henry Walford Davies. It is unknown when the words were first set to music, but a proposed date is 1591, or earlier! Other interesting musical features include the use of a ‘Picardy third’, and ‘false relations’, contributing to the haunting quality of this enduring piece, both in the heart of the English Midlands, and further afield.

This arrangement is suitable for all orchestras of beginner-intermediate ability or higher. There is plenty of interest for both experienced players, and for newcomers. The instrumentation is designed to facilitate both a full sound, but also for flexibility, which is often desired by school, youth, and amateur orchestras.

'Coventry No 1' is a piece for flute and piano. It was inspired by the steam engine, Coventry No 1. The engine had been used at Newdigate Colliery, near Bedworth (Warwickshire, UK) and my father was instrumental in saving it from being scrapped while it was there. In recent years the engine has been used as 'Thomas The Tank Engine' and resides at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Quainton (UK). Duration: ca. 2:19.

THE COVENTRY CAROL is an English Christmas carol and Christmas lullaby from the 16th century that was traditionally performed in Coventry, England. This carol refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, when Herod ordered the killing of Jewish baby boys. It has a simple tune in a minor key using a Picardy Third which is the inclusion of the relative major chord in this case at the end of two phrases. Arranged as an INTERMEDIATE STRING TRIO (two violins and cello) in A minor, it provides a lovely carol for Christmas services and programs. Separate sheets of music are provided for each instrument in addition to the score.

The Coventry Carol is an English Christmas carol dating from the 16th Century. The carol was traditionally performed in Coventry in England as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors. The carol refers to the massacre of the innocents, in which King Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed, and takes the form of a lullaby sung by mothers of the doomed children.

This setting opens with a verse of basic harmonisation, moving onto a more contrapuntal second verse, followed by a bass section lead in verse three. The final verse is tutti with a solo trumpet descant.
