Freely inspired by the poem of the same name by Charles Baudelaire, this quartet in three movements is derived essentially from the slow motif which begins the works, which generates most of the musical material which follows. The style is more linear than harmonic. The four-part invention which opens the work is followed by the second section (played without interruption) which is a kind of long suspended melody. The third movement is a quick scherzo with a final evocation of the opening motif before a brief coda. The following piece, the Prelude & Fugue in D Major, is by his son, Wilhelm Hieronymus Pachelbel here arranged for CLARINET QUARTET, which contrasts his Fathers piece in many ways, its sheer eccentricity and brilliance shines through the whole work! A loose comparison would be that he shares some challenging passages with Dad!! (... and at bars 66/68 a door bell can heard, revolutionary!!) Each carol has the notes fully fingered, simple logical bowing, and is designed specifically for a beginner player.
