After an appropriate period of mourning, DAVID calls for BATHSHEBA and takes her as his wife and eventually gives birth to a son. DAVID in the meantime still conceals to himself the actions that precipitated URIAH’S death. NATHAN confronts DAVID about a rich man in the town who has stolen a lamb from a poor man. DAVID outraged at the injustice tells NATHAN that the man will die for his unfeeling actions. NATHAN then reveals that he (DAVID) is that man [There Were Two Men – Nathan and the Prophetess’]. Now at last the matter is exposed and David must face his actions. As NATHAN and the prophets leave, one of DAVID’S men comes in and tells him that his son has died. Giving in to his impulses, orders his men to have her brought to the palace on the pretense of speaking to her about her husband, URIAH who is in the field with the troops. DAVID, seeing her beauty and rationalizing his own importance, proceeds to seduce her and lies with her [Come Lie with Me – David and Bathsheba]. BATHSHEBA, also lonely is seduced by his presence and gives in to his wishes. Leaving before daylight to escape notice, DAVID goes about business as usual, trying to forget what has happened. URIAH, a conscientious soldier, returns home, but sleeps outside on his steps out of respect for the men still fighting on the front. Seeing that his ploy has not worked, he has URIAH and some of his men over to the palace for drinks [Pour Me Another One – Troops, Uriah and David]. Getting URIAH drunk, DAVID has him escorted home, but as before he sleeps outside. As a last desperate measure, he sends a letter for JOAB (David’s commander and confidant) back with URIAH to place URIAH on the front line and then have the rest of the troops pull back leaving him exposed.
