Marie for shame - based on a setting of the poem Marie, vous estes paresseuse - Marie for shame you keep a-bed too long, you must get up and enjoy life. 2. Nocturne is basically a segue to the first movement, in which Marie yawns and goes back to sleep! The harmonies are rich and yet somnolent. 3. Camp David is a sprightly number based on the Yiddish folksong Ikh bin a meidel in de joren - I am a maiden come of age and I am looking for a husband. 4. Blue Boar Blue is based on a poem by a friend stuck studying in his college room (Blue Boar Quad at Christ Church Oxford) but dreaming of sunny outings to the river and punting. The sound samples are electronic previews. In the case of the 4-hands versions, the pdf files include the score and also separate piano parts. It is a challenging piece suited for advanced choirs in an academic or concert setting or for adventurous ensembles in sacred services. It mixes ancient and modern forms and sonorities to depict the contrition, repentance, absolution, and salvation portrayed in the psalm, juxtaposing medieval chant with Whitacre-esque clusters and dissonances. In structure, David's Kyrie roughly follows the Kyrie of the Christian mass and even borrows a melodic line from a medieval Kyrie. The heading for Psalm 51 states that it is For the director of music underscoring the fact that all 150 psalms in the Bible were meant to be sung, as they have been for most of the last 3,000 years. It is my hope that David's Kyrie will be an encouragement to continue that great heritage.

He was commonly called by his Christian name followed by the name of his house, a common custom in Wales, and one which survives to the present day.Like many other Welsh Bards, David was also a harpist, and is reputed to have had his harp continually at his side. On his death-bed, he is supposed to have asked that his harp be once more placed in his hands in order that he might play just one more tune.The melody he played was afterwards called by his name Dafydd Y Garreg Wen (David of the White Rock), and this same melody was performed on a single Welsh harp at his funeral, as was his dying wish.The Welsh words were subsequently added by Ceiriog Hughes in the nineteenth century.
