Loch Earn is a reel written by performer, composer and music publisher Nathaniel Gow (1763 – 1831), fourth son of acclaimed Perthshire fiddler Niel Gow.  This arrangement for double reed duo of oboe and bassoon has been classed as 'intermediate' standard but, for those who would prefer to increase the difficulty, the answer is to play it faster!!

Loch Earn itself is a Scottish fresh water loch, approximately six and a half miles long, which lies within the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.  The area around the loch is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including kingfishers, osprey, red kites, red deer, mountain hare and wild goats.  Loch Earn is used extensively for fishing and assorted water-sports activities.

Cheeky arrangement of my Perky Polka imagined as a duel between Violin and Bassoon, with each showing off their range and versatility. Finishes with a fast as you like section. Not the most common combination of instruments but great for building interaction and cooperation. Have graded it Intermediate because of the double-stopping for the violin and general quirkiness.

Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was an influential German music critic and composer who was troubled by mental health issues for much of his life.  Schumann’s enthusiasm for music was evident at an early age but he was discouraged from pursuing this as a career and encouraged towards the law instead.  Ultimately, music won out and Schumann began studying piano with Friedrich Wieck, whose daughter Clara was later to become Schumann’s wife.  After damage to one hand affected his playing ability, Schumann turned his attention to musicology and composition.

Träumerei (Dreaming) has been described as one of the most famous piano works ever written.  It is one of a collection of short pieces, entitled Kinderscenen (Scenes from Childhood) written in 1838.  This arrangement, for double reed duo of oboe and bassoon, would make a charming addition to a recital programme.
