The jazz piano style known as three-handed swing was made famous, if not actually invented, by Boston pianist Dave McKenna. Here is a written-out, non-improvisational, original piece using that approach. The melody is either a single treble note or the top note of each right-hand chord, sometimes sustained through a change of the underlying harmony. The left hand plays a quarter-note bass line throughout, just as Mr. McKenna could do for hours on end! The piece is in an ambiguous key, using F# and F natural, C# and C natural, D# and D natural, for a sound that moves between E minor, C major and G major. Pedaling is optional. Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus is a lovely Advent hymn. The text was written by Charles Wesley and has been used in Advent services regularly since it was written in the 1740s. The text has been set to many tunes but the one used in this version is Hyfrydol, This tune was written by Rowland Prichard about 100 years after Wesley's text and is used extensively in many hymnals but especially for this particular text. This arrangement is for orchestra with optional 3-5 octave handbell choir. The handbell arrangement unusual in that the 4 octave version does require the use of the F3 bell. Other than that this is a relatively simple, if thickly orchestrated, arrangement. There are three sections using different methods of music making, the first is a fairly straightforward setting, the second focuses on short sounds in the melody which is also in the lower voices, and the third explores musical canon before bringing back a more traditional musical setting. There are two distinct parts for most instruments with a few splitting more. Flutes, trumpets, and trombones have three parts. The trombone 3 part is intended to be bass trombone but should be playable on regular trombone and if any section only has two divisions, the lower voice should have more players unless otherwise notated. That applies to flutes and trumpets as well. There are four horn parts that do not split. The timpani part should be playable on two drums with active pedaling to change notes mid-piece, although four drums is perfectly acceptable.

This advanced duet is primarily inspired by the carol He Is Born, but also contains many references to Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle. Both melodies are explored in several minor modes before He Is Born is finally presented in its familiar, major tonality.

Careful pedaling is essential to keep the running lines clear and to allow staccato articulations to pop against legato melody lines. The melodies move through several ranges of the keyboard and across both players, requiring the musicians to be aware of balance within their own parts and across the instrument.

The PDF file is formatted to be printed double-sided. Once printed and bound, odd numbered pages (including the cover page) should be on the right (where the primo player sits), and even numbered pages should be on the left (where the secondo player sits). Alternatively, if two pianos are being used, the file can be printed single-sided and the parts separated out; the primo player will have the odd numbered pages, and the secondo player will have the even numbered pages.

I make piano solo arrangements for my students of songs that they love! My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Each of my arrangements is made for a specific student, so the results will vary in terms of playing level. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece. This arrangement was made for a late beginner, even though it's probably better for early intermediate. She had just finished the Level 1 books of the Keith Snell series and playing in Federation Class Elementary II. Pedaling is pretty straightforward. Fingering suggestions are included.
