Darius Milhaud was NOT a member of the insider's group of Old Guard French composers, epitomized by Debussy and Ravel. Ravel had usupred Debussy's place as the pre-eminent modernist, and he rightly understood it was the duty of the next generation to rebel against his own work, and find their own ways and voices. Hence, Les Six was formed to accomplish this, just as Ravel's Les Apaches, ( not a Native American meaning, but a general reference to being musical warriors) had, by turns, admired, undermined, and then surpassed Debussy. The music here uses Milhaud's best-known contribution to modernity, bi-tonality. It takes the form of arpeggiated augmented major 7th chords played against each other: as the relationship between the chords comes to the tritone, each iteration slows down, but only to De-Emphasize the stark contrast, rather than bring it out. A second section uses mirrored, symmetrical patterns in each hand. The finale concludes with plain triads juxtaposed in a bi-tonal fashion, with the same contrary motion towards the tritone using a ritard and diminuendo. Approx. running time is 4 mins 30 secs. Easy to play, easy to read, not as easy to hear! Pedaling is fully indicated throughout. Debussy never used bi-tonality, and Ravel hinted at it a few times, but it was Milhaud's stock-in-trade. I make piano solo arrangements for my students of songs that they love! My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Each of my arrangements is made for a specific student, so the results will vary in terms of playing level. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece.

This arrangement was made for a late beginner student currently working on Federation class Elementary 2. It had its challenges but a little perseverance did the trick and pushed my student to get better at jumping around with the left hand. Pedaling is pretty straightforward. As with many of my arrangements, I find that making the left hand a bit of a time-keeper is always helpful, especially with pop vocal rhythms.

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus is a lovely Advent hymn. The text was written by Charles Wesley and has been used in Advent services regularly since it was written in the 1740s. The text has been set to many tunes but the one used in this version is Hyfrydol, This tune was written by Rowland Prichard about 100 years after Wesley's text and is used extensively in many hymnals but especially for this particular text. This arrangement is for orchestra with optional 3-5 octave handbell choir. The handbell arrangement unusual in that the 4 octave version does require the use of the F3 bell. Other than that this is a relatively simple, if thickly orchestrated, arrangement. There are three sections using different methods of music making, the first is a fairly straightforward setting, the second focuses on short sounds in the melody which is also in the lower voices, and the third explores musical canon before bringing back a more traditional musical setting. There are two distinct parts for most instruments with a few splitting more. Flutes, trumpets, and trombones have three parts. The trombone 3 part is intended to be bass trombone but should be playable on regular trombone and if any section only has two divisions, the lower voice should have more players unless otherwise notated. That applies to flutes and trumpets as well. There are four horn parts that do not split. The timpani part should be playable on two drums with active pedaling to change notes mid-piece, although four drums is perfectly acceptable.

Whereas many composers have written piano works inspired by children and the way children perceive the world around them, Childhood memories goes a step further by evoking these sentiments remembered by an adult many years later. As the adult reflects on the bright and carefree days of his or her childhood, inevitably, these reflections become colored by hitherto extraneous, un-childlike sentiments such as nostalgia and a pervading sadness brought on by the realization that those days are now lost forever. In Childhood memories, the recollections of moments and events in the child’s life are presented almost chronologically, beginning with the energetic pedaling of Bike ride and ending with the bittersweet festivity of Happy birthday! Thus, as the child grows and his or her understanding of reality becomes more acute, so the psychological and technical aspects of each individual piece’s musical language become more complex.

Style: Post-Romantic; excellent pieces for concert performance and exam purposes. Technical difficulty: medium to difficult. Duration: 12 minutes circa.
