This is my second piece that I have wrote for piano and in general. The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.

As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Anyway, thanks again for listening, hope you enjoyed it and there is much more to come!

This piece was inspired by Chopin's pieces 'Nocturne in C# Minor' and Prelude Op. 28, No. 4. The solemn, singing melody in the right hand is meant to be played as marked, 'cantabile'. This, along with the left hand's slow moving arpeggios with some consonant and dissonant parts creates a reflective, peaceful mood.

Whilst writing this piece I wanted to focus on writing a piece in binary form, as the second half of the piece shows. I still tried to keep the melodic melody in the right hand, but the left hand changes to a waltz-like accompaniment. If I were to write this piece again, I may have explored the first part for much longer and made a nice transition into the second part.

As for now, this is my last piece which I composed at an earlier time. I am now going to start working on some new fresh pieces, focusing on certain aspects of music. Thanks again, Damien.

Her name is Pippin, and, much to Whiskers’ surprise, she’s just like him—same colour, same cautious yet curious nature. It’s almost as if fate brought them together in this old, abandoned house.

As they slowly approach each other, any lingering fears melt away, replaced by the joy of meeting someone so similar. Both curious and cautious, it’s no wonder these two found each other in such an unusual place. Before long, Whiskers and Pippin start to play, their trust in each other growing with every moment. They share stories, laugh, and explore the corners of the house together, learning more about one another with each step.

Excitement builds as they realise there’s so much more to discover outside these walls. With a shared eagerness to show off their homes, they decide to leave the abandoned house behind. Whiskers leads the way, Pippin by his side, as they venture into the woods, ready to explore each other’s worlds and embark on new adventures together.

Now Whiskers has come across this mysterious house in the forest, he approaches it with curiosity and cautiousness. This is reflected in the start of the piece where the chords are slow and cautious but they eventually turn into quaver broken chords as Whiskers begins to have a look around the house, taking care in every step he takes. As Whiskers explores the outside of the house, he finds smashed windows, broken doors, rotting wood, and a once loved and alive home, abandoned and forgotten, left to rot and fall apart.

He comes back around to the front of the house now that he has had a good look around it and has a decision to make. Does his curious nature take him inside to explore the unknown, with a possibility of finding food or a safe place to live or does he go back and find his way back home? Of course, Whiskers can’t help himself and he decides to venture into the house to find out what lies inside.

Whiskers ears prick up as he hears that he is not the only creature inside this mysterious house. His little heart begins to race which is reflected in the opening of this piece. Whiskers knows that he isn’t the only one in this house but he is curious as to who else might be in here. He finds a safe spot under a table but keeps his ears and eyes out to hear who might be creeping around.

The footsteps stop and start, they sound small but he’s not too sure. Whiskers once again can’t help his curious nature and he decides to venture out and find who or what this other creature is that has the same idea to explore this house. He makes sure to keep his footsteps light to not bring any attention to himself and not scare away the other creature. He looks around one room, and then another, covering almost the entire house except the attic. Whiskers decides to climb up into to the attic to find out once and for all what this other creature is.

I wrote this for a composition assignment at school one time and it started out with the moving bassline that is present for nearly the entire piece. The title itself describes the piece - “moving bassline�. After coming up with the moving bassline, I wrote the melody on top which is used throughout the piece and built upon. 

This piece uses a ternary form which is one of my favourite forms to write in. I especially like going in a slightly different direction the second and final time the A section comes around. So in the first A section, the bassline is introduced and the melody comes soon after. The bassline then transitions into the B section which features a mobile melody on top of the bassline. This was a lot of fun to write as I came up with 8 bars first and then repeated that theme two more times but with a more intense variation each time. Then in the final section of the piece, the original motif returns with some variations to keep it interesting and fresh.

There’s a funny little story with how I wrote this piece. I’ve got these dice called ‘Rory’s Story Cubes’ which have little pictures on them and they’re meant to be an ice breaker where you roll the dice and come up with a story based on the images that come up. Anyway, I thought of using them to help me come up with an idea for a new composition. So I rolled some of the dice and there was a picture of a fire, a house, and someone running - something like that, I can’t remember exactly what the pictures were. Then that prompted me to write this composition: ‘Fire in the House’. It was a great way to try something new and write something that I never would have thought to write if it were not for those dice.

Through the piece I have written little annotations to explain what is happening in the story of the piece of music and the scene I was trying to reflect in the music. It was a fun little piece to write and I really enjoyed using the dice to come up with a story for me to write about - I should definitely do it more often to try something new and get out of my comfort zone. I highly recommend you pick some up one day if you write music too - they’re a great tool to have!

How the name came to be for this piece is actually a funny little story. When I created all the folders on my computer for each track, there was one that I already had an idea for in that key and so I simply labelled it as ‘Taken’ so I knew that key was taken already.  Then when I came around to writing this piece, I thought “Why don’t I just use this word as the title?”, and that’s how this piece was born.

The name then inspired the rest of the piece and I think the story in a general sense is the feeling of someone or something being taken away from you. The feeling of grief, mourning, and loss that underlies your day to day life from that point on. As the piece progresses, it moves through sections that are brighter or darker which reflect the up and down nature of these life experiences, sometimes you feel more hopeful and other days you don’t feel so great.

This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.

I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.

I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

The title of this piece also heavily influenced the direction of this composition. I think I began with the ostinato idea that is heard at the beginning and then thought of the title as I was continuing to write the piece. The ostinato is meant to create a sparkly sound that ebbs and flows slowly and quickly throughout the piece. The piece slowly evolves as it goes on with new additions in both the right hand and the left hand and the melody toward the end of the piece is slowly revealed after many iterations from the very beginning.

I think one of the really important aspects of this piece is the phrasing as it really is one continuous idea that doesn’t stop until the very end. The phrasing is essential for the piece to make sense and breath naturally. So the dynamics, use of rubato, and accents are all very important tools to be used in order to bring out the true nature of this piece.

This piece takes you on a journey of the rain starting to come down drop by drop to pattering down in the morning. The piece begins with slow moving chords that represent the rain starting to come down drop by drop. As the left hand moves onto an arpeggio accompaniment the rain starts to become more active. Then the melody also becomes more active with the faster rhythm. Finally, for the rest of the piece the right hand plays semiquaver arpeggios as the rain is coming down more rapidly than before. The melody has moved to the right hand and could reflect the larger raindrops pattering down on the ground. The rain finally comes to an end at the end of the piece where it slows down and quietens.

In 'Afternoon,' I strive to encapsulate the laid-back ambiance of a lazy afternoon while maintaining a sense of continual movement throughout the piece. The harmonies and chords gracefully ebb and flow, mirroring the relaxed yet ever-changing nature of the afternoon. Opening with a gentle Oom-pah rhythm in the left hand, the melody unfolds leisurely above, creating a serene atmosphere. Harmonically, I utilise cyclical progressions, adding to the music's fluidity and sense of perpetual motion.

Structurally, the composition unfolds gradually, beginning with a peaceful introduction that sets the tone for the rest of the piece. As the melody evolves slowly over time, listeners are invited to immerse themselves in the tranquil scene, savouring each moment of the afternoon's tranquillity.

The second last piece of this album ‘Sunset’ is a depiction of the sun setting after a relaxed Sunday. The piece open with long-sustained chords in both hand which are reflective of the beauty, calmness, and peacefulness of the sun sitting among the landscape in the distance. This is emphasised by the slow tempo and the soft dynamics of the composition.

As the piece moves away from the sustained chords, the an arpeggiated pattern is introduced in the left hand which adds some rhythm. The melody floats above this accompaniment and is unhurried and gentle. In the final section of ‘Sunset’ the right hand joins the left with it’s flowing arpeggiated motion to continue the calm and peaceful atmosphere.

I don’t watch the sunset often so writing this piece allowed me to think about the feelings I have when I sit there and simply appreciate the beauty of this event that happens every day, something that goes largely unnoticed in our busy lives.

This composition is the last piece of my album ‘Sunday’. It is heard after ‘Sunset’ and reflects the stars that have come out after a relaxing Sunday. The piece begins and ends with warm chords as well as a slow, flowing melody that rests on top. This short introduction encapsulates the cooling air and the fading glow of the sun as the stars start to show themselves spotted throughout the night sky.

Most of the piece is built upon flowing arpeggios, initially in the left hand, but later in the right hand too. These arpeggios are reflective of the twinkling stars scattered in the night sky. The simple, slow moving melody drifts above the arpeggios and creates an overarching arc to the piece, reflecting the spiral of the milky way visible from our planet. The culmination of these elements creates a dreamy and sparkly atmosphere to mark the end of a beautiful Sunday.
