Although each piece is written in the key of F, lever and pedal changes are clearly marked and each piece has a few accidentals. Diamond shaped notes are used to indicate lever changes. Each dance possesses a charming quality and emulates its own style of the period. The suite can be played from beginning to end without interruption, that is, pedal and lever changes are indicated at the end of each dance so you are ready to start the next dance. Each dance is two pages and page turns are only required if playing the entire suite. This suite is perfect for wedding prelude and receptions, and provides elegant background music for any occasion.

These two courantes are well-known dances from the famous collection entitled Terpsichore by Michael Praetorius. This piece is arranged for virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments and percussion, with optional keyboard part. They are attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts or end-of-semester events. They are fairly easy to play too. The flexible arrangement with alternative transpositions makes them playable by all sorts of non-standard ensembles. The keyboard part enables you to use the piece as a solo or duet and trio for mixed instruments. This 4-part arrangement is presented in a single PDF file which includes the Full Score; Part 1 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 2 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 3 (C, F, B flat, E flat), Part 4 (C, B flat, E flat); Keyboard and Percussion. The optional keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible the keyboard player should improvise around the part and chords shown. A piano sounds distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a hand-held drum, clave or small headless tambourine. Two players are usually required and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Other percussion instruments may be added as desired. Orchestration is for wind quintet Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F and Bassoon.The style of the first one is marcato, with a touch of irony! The bassoon leads with an Alberti pattern followed by the first melodic idea stated on the horn. This motif is eventually taken up by all the instruments. The melody then morphs into a lovely little B-section melody on the flute with an oboe obbligato before the DS. Surprisingly simple, but 3 mins long.Movement 2 plays on the meaning of courante (running). It's in 3, as courantes were. Each instrument has an important role in keeping the music flowing - even the bassoon and horn. The middle section has a mournful bassoon melody with weaving contrapuntal lines from all the others. There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda.Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. It also has a few modern touches. After the short (2 bars) 12/8 section, there is a Berlioz-esque dance of the witches type of fever about the music. Then DS to fine

Published by Douglas Brooks-Davies (A0.898101).  Among the many compositions for guitar by the celebrated guitarist Mauro Giuliani (1781-1828) is a collection of 16 charmingly tuneful dances, published under the title La Tersicore del Nord (The Northern Tersicore, this being the name of the ancient Greek muse of the dance), thereby suggesting that Giuliani felt the collection to be inspired in some way by what he understood to be a northern European spirit. Here are six of them, nos 6, 7, 10, 11, 12 and 13, arranged for recorder quartet - soprano (descant), alto (treble), tenor and bass. The melodies are Giuliani's, the rest is mine, each part being given some at least of the fun in these engaging pieces. Tempo indications are also editorial.
