Irish music cast its spell early on in the many years I have performed as part of a duo of violin and recorder, so it was inevitable that I would be drawn to create new arrangements for this intimate combination of instruments. Kathleen contains four traditional tunes selected from O’Neill’s Music of Ireland and arranged as three duos (two of the tunes combine as a medley) by Dorothy van Joolen Barth. These tunes are part of a larger anthology titled Maidens of Melody Volume Two, available separately as a download for those who would prefer to have the complete book. As an audio sample, the medley Sweet Kathleen Machree/Kathleen O'Moore is provided here. These arrangements can be played on recorder and violin (which is how we play them), flute and violin, or two violins. If the upper part is played on recorder, the recorder player may switch between soprano, alto, and tenor recorders in accordance with the range and mood of each piece. We generally prefer the soprano recorder on the faster reels, jigs, and hornpipes and the tenor recorder (or sometimes the alto recorder) on the more lyrical pieces. In performing this music, we often devise new ornaments, in keeping with Celtic tradition where no two performances of a piece are ever identical. You will likewise add your own meaning to this evocative music. These pieces are delightful perform for Celtic festivals, St. Patrick's Day celebration, weddings, birthdays, and other theme events. The Score is available as a separate download The following is taken from the catalogue of the composer's works:- The photocopy of the MS is marked String Quartet No. 1, but is not regarded by the composer as part of his mature string quartet writing. The MS itself was lost in a fire at the home of Col. Robert Tong, formerly Registrar of Queen Mary College, University of London. A typesetting was made in November 2000 as the photocopy had faded so badly. The composer's sketch books suggest that the movements were written in the order 3,2,4,1. 1. Allegro 2. Scherzo (Allegro energico) Trio I - tempo di menuetto Trio II - no tempo indicated - [andante] 3. Andante con moto 4. Allegro ma non troppo Composer's note:- As the above suggests, I originally had no intention of publishing this early piece. The recording by the Lochrian String Quartet of the six numbered quartets, however , together with sleeve notes admitting the existence of this work, prompted me into revising my opinion and allowing its publication, so that anyone wishing to study this first effort may do so. It shows certain traits that I was to develop in the six quartets and others that I was to discard, and therefore is of musicological interest. It also has a few good, albeit imitative, tunes! Duration: Approx. 25 mins. COLIN BAYLISS was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1948. His life-long love of music led him to compose from an early age and he now has a catalogue of over a hundred works including two operas, four symphonies, six string quartets and many other pieces for most instrumental and chamber groupings, over seventy of them published. He is a member of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, the North West Composers' Association and the Performing Rights Society. As well as writing music himself, he has also compiled annotated catalogues of the works of Anthony Hedges and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. CDs of his piano music played by David Martin and complete organ music played by Ronald Frost are available on the New Century Classics label. I was totally blown away! Written by Sia Furler and Jesse Hatkin, it was nominated for four Grammys in 2014 and the music video is one of the most viewed Youtube videos ever posted! I have made a one minute video of this Voice and Quartet version of the song, plus the thirty second audio clip which features the introduction. My daughter, Alice Rose Wild, is singing the vocal part. This is one of my favourite arrangements and you can view a professional quartet play a live version of the Quartet but without the singer at my Youtube Channel, Helen Marple-Horvat Songwriter, Arranger, Composer, Capriccio Quartet, Chandelier.It is in a different key, and the first violin has the tune which entails more double stopping for the other players. Otherwise it is quite similar to the this version. The bowing is only a guide, so feel free to use lots of bow changes if it helps you to play it like a rock star! From the composer's program notes included with this purchase:I have taken Schubert’s famous setting and arranged it in a set of musical homages to other composers. I have also included Schubert’s original theme, transposed down to F, and I would recommend playing it twice in the beginning to give your audience a good idea of it.For most of the pieces, I tried to capture the composer’s overall style; however, there are a few particular pieces that are either quoted or used as the stylistic basis, as follows: Mozart - I based this variation, stylistically, on Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major (K.467), specifically movement two (Andante), as well as some of his earliest childhood piano compositions. Symphony 40 in G minor (K.550) is quoted rhythmically. Strauss, Jr. - For inspiration, I used Du und Du, Op. 367, a waltz that is derived from various parts of his beloved operetta, Die Fledermaus. I quoted rhythms from this, as well as from Frühlingsstimmen, Op. 410. Joplin - I didn’t base this on any particular piece of Joplin’s; I tried to include elements that are common in his rags (a short introduction, arpeggiated diminished seventh chords, chromaticism, syncopation over a boom-chuck). Perhaps the best advice comes from Joplin himself: Don’t play this piece fast. It is never right to play ragtime fast. Porter - I had to include an offering from the Great American Songbook! Frank Sinatra recorded several of Porter’s well-known tunes in the 1940s, such as Easy To Love, Night and Day, and I Love You; his renditions of these songs are heavy on the schmaltz and sentimentality, which is exactly what I was trying to achieve in this variation.Bach - The minor variation! I had Fugue in G minor, BWV 578 (Little Fugue) in mind when writing this.der Jodelkönig - As Heidenröslein is a strophic, folk-songesque German piece, I thought it fitting to end the variations with an imitation of traditional Alpine yodeling.  It is named in honor of Franzl Lang, the Yodelking.
