Les premières esquisses du nonet op. 30 furent faites durant l'été 1991 dans le golfe de Lerici (Italie du Nord) qui empreigne l'atmosphère de l'œuvre de son calme idyllique et des souvenirs de Percy Bysshe Shelley et Lord Byron qui vécurent tous deux là pendant un certain temps. L'œuvre comprend un mouvement dont les différentes subdivisions sont annoncées par un motif d'introduction au cor. Le nonet fut achevé en octobre 1991 et créé le même mois à Zug en Suisse.

This is the second of eight waltzes I composed between September 2020 and April 2024. This was the second waltz I wrote, and the second during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a gentle piece with a sense of a dream-like dance. The form is A-B-A'-A-Coda. It starts off in D and centers around the key of D, until the end, when the Coda transports the listener to an ending in G. Think of it like the dancers in the dream disappearing from sight.

Regarding articulation: I use tenuto and accent + tenuto marks frequently in my compositions. I tend to use them mostly as indications for the melody and/or notes that should be emphasized or brought out. I never intend the accent + tenuto to be harsh, but it should be stronger than the tenuto alone.

I intend to have a collection of all eight waltzes available for sale in addition to individual pieces. The available recording on Arrange Me and Sheet Music Plus is an export from Finale – not a live performance. Note, Finale did not keep the tempo consistent throughout. Do not slow down in the B section staring in mm. 13.

This movement is the fourth of five dance portraits (collectively titled Musique SABA) commemorating the Southern Academy of Ballet Arts (S.A.B.A.) and its performing company, Pas de Vie, of Tallahassee, Florida. The piece originates from 2003 when composed for the dancer Seah Hagan's first piano lesson, devoted to just two notes, at age four. Fittingly enough, the left-hand part embeds musical ciphers suggested by the syllables of her name, as Se-ah using forms of the pitches C and A, including in a simple way playable by the novice. Meanwhile, the right-hand part, as if for the teacher, quotes Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers--a borrowing itself punning since drawn from Casse-noisette (1892). The new, playful waltz lasts about forty seconds.
