Here’s an arrangement of Verdi’s ‘Brindisi’ from his opera La Traviata. It’s a great addition to any concert programme – and not too difficult either. Brindisi is a port city on the Adriatic Sea, in southern Italy’s Apulia region. The red-stone Aragonese Castle stands on a small island at the harbor’s entrance. The tall Monumento al Marinaio d’Italia, a rudder-shaped limestone memorial to sailors, has sea and city views. Across the harbour, the Swabian Castle of Brindisi dates from the 13th century.

This is from a collection of pieces I originally arranged for my Middle School Mariachi Band at Curtis Corner Middle School in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Since that time, I have used these arrangements with all ages through college, pros, and especially two families that happened to have the correct instrumentation between the parents and their children. At the middle school, the strings were more advanced than the trumpets and I needed to deal with young string players only being familiar playing sharp keys and brass players only being familiar with flat keys. My solution for one of the first arrangements was in “Mexican Hat Dance�. I assigned the violins two simple double stops (their first double stops: one finger in low first position while bowing both the A and E string-the first finger on the E string is an F chord and first finger on the A string is a C7 chord). I split the four songs, two in flat keys two in sharp keys. The trumpets were assigned several unfamiliar pitches in the sharp keys like G#, but with plenty of repetition and not technically challenging figures except in the bridge of “Mexican Hat Dance�. I intended to cover that part of the song on my trumpet, but the trumpets always rose up and nailed it!The set we usually played included: “La Cucaracha�, “Cielito Lindo�, “De Colores�, and “Mexican Hat Dance�, all available here (soon).

I've changed the image I've used too as I didn't realise the original one had 'super heroes' in it! It incorporates a tune called 'The Somerset Wassail' which it opens with, but it is played around with later in the piece. I'm very pleased with - it's a major piece of work, and think it will make a great concert piece for brass bands of intermediate standard.

This piece was written at the time of the American Civil War in about 1861, and was originally based on the melody 'John's Brown's Body', but more religious overtones were added when Julia Ward Howe wrote the well-known lyrics to the song as it is sung today. The original music was composed by William Steffe, but this arrangement was commissioned by 'Classics Galore!' in 2011 and was originally performed by full orchestra, brass band and choral society. A polka is  a vivacious couple dance of Bohemian origin in duple time; was a basic pattern of hop-step-close-step; a lively Bohemian dance tune in 2/4 time. The polka was originally a Czech peasant dance, developed in Eastern Bohemia (now part of Czechoslovakia).Growing up in Pennsylvania, nd playing for various local community bands, VFW bands ,Lion's Band ,  etc  we played the Pa Polka for many functions, churches, Seniors, Cake Walks, 4th of July programs, summer and spring concerts, marching bands, parades, and many more events.The Pennsylvania Polka is such a fun, happy song, in a march tempo beat. However, I am so proud of this arrangement as I am of the state I live in. ,  Another interesting fact is that people not familiar with the song informed me this sounds like a carousel  music at an amusement park This arrangement would be great for holidays, church functions, Seniors, July 4th concerts, kid's programs, parades, community concerts, or just any other fun concert.
