Near to our family home is an abandoned water mill called Dron Mill. All that remains today is the shell of a building, spaces where wheels and axles once stood, and a babbling burn which has been reclaimed by nature. In centuries past, this would have been a place of activity and prosperity. I imagined a miller living in this idyllic corner, concealed by the hillside. Maybe he and his wife danced in the garden. The Miller’s Waltz reflects the indescribable magic which some places possess. A poet in the 19th century also felt this magic when he/she wrote anonymously: At the fit o’ Balmanno, a whin-covered hill, Nestlin’ mang trees, there you’ll find the auld mill; If wi’ peace and contentment your mind you wad fill, Gae up to Dron Mill by the Ochils. I am a keen road and hill runner, and I often find solitude, fitness, and mental rejuvenation in the foothills of the Ochils. Perthshire is a beautiful place to run. Due to the lack of planes and cars, I was amazed at the sudden abundance of animals and plant growth which appeared quite suddenly during that spring and summer. I felt that nature was thanking us for a brief pause in our frantic lifestyles, where we belch emissions and pollute our souls, minds and the planet in a frantic rush to feed our lust for materialism. I feel that many people (myself included) were able to stop, reflect and re-evaluate our roles in our lives. Pause Mere waves on this ocean navigating currents of precious space Do less or more   Home a sacred place for some Breathe Breathe the light of this divine time   Nature revisits Clear air Silent paths Moments   Time for less, for more Movement Space Open creative pause. Fledgling Blackbird by Dan Jones www.danjonesguitarist.com As a guitarist and teacher with nearly 30 years of experience, one piece which many guitarists of all styles are keen to play is Paul McCartney's beautiful acoustic ballad, 'Blackbird'. The key to mastering this particular song is to learn the right hand (or left hand in McCartney's case!) picking pattern. It is based on a repeated thumb movement which alternates rapidly, on the beat, between two bass notes on different strings. Once this is mastered, the player can tackle the considerable fretting-hand challenges of the song. I wanted to compose a piece which could hold its own musically in a performance, but also give the learner the chance to master the country-inspired 'Blackbird' picking pattern, with fewer challenges for the fretting hand. I hope that 'Fledgling Blackbird' achieves these aims.
