Dark Eyes (Les Yeux Noirs) Arranged for Easy Classroom Ensemble by Dan JonesYour download includes a full score and all parts in notes and, for guitar/ukulele and bass, chords and TAB. There is some debate as to whether the tune to Dark Eyes (Les Yeux Noirs) is a traditional melody, or a Russian cabaret song. Whichever the case, it is a tune which has captured the imagination of musicians for many years. It was made famous in the 20th Century by the great Belgian jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Several sets of lyrics have also been added to the tune, in many languages. The instrumentation is:(1)  The melody for C instruments (such as flute)(2)  An easy part for C instruments(3)  The same melody for B flat instruments(4)  The same easy part for B flat instruments(5)  The same melody for E flat instruments(6)  A similar easy part for E flat instruments(7)  A single-line percussion part(8)  A piano part which could be played by a pupil (approximately ABRSM Grade 3) or teacher(9)  A ukulele part with chords, the melody and TAB(10) A guitar part with chords, the melody and TAB(11)  A bass part in notes and TAB. Fare Thee Well My Own True Love  Arranged for Intermediate/Advanced Guitar by Dan Jones  I chanced upon this beautiful melody under the title of ‘Irish Love Song’ in 2022. I quickly arranged it for solo guitar to add to my own repertoire. I then researched the correct title of the melody and found that the closest match was ‘Fare Thee Well My Own True Love’. The tune is in two distinct sections and the ‘B’ section has several variants. This one is lesser known, but I find it very melodic and poignant. The score is given in two versions, one with just notes, the second with notes and TAB.  Less-experienced players could consider playing just the first page which avoids the later higher positions, but still gives the piece in its entirety. Various versions of the tune have been recorded by a range of artists. The melody is also similar to that of the folk song The Leaving of Liverpool, also covered by artists as diverse as The Dubliners to The Pogues. A YouTube video of the arranger performing the song will be uploaded before the end of April 2023.

Ray Charles’ version reached number 1 in the Billboard chart that same year. My solo arrangement is designed for more experienced players. This download gives you a version with just notes and a second with notes and TAB. Both versions also have chord symbols in case players wish to improvise around the sequence. Writers have speculated that the song was written about Carmichael’s sister, named Georgia, but the writer himself state it was inspired by the US state. In 1979 the song was officially designated as the State Song of Georgia. It is perhaps this ambiguity and possible double-meaning of the lyric which make it so alluring. I was introduced to Georgia by a primary school music teacher in the 1970’s. I remember it having a profound impact on me as a child. It is for this reason that I love to play this version for audiences. I usually play the piece from a lead sheet to allow freedom for improvisation, but I felt a published ‘concert’ version may be useful for other players.
