A Well-Traveled Road was first sketched in the summer of 1989. It was revised and orchestrated in 1992 for a recording on MMC (now defunct) by the Slovak Radio and Television Orchestra under the direction of Robert Stankovsky. This video represents a revised version from the original 1992 score and 1995 recording. NOTES from 1995: I have always been intrigued with the transformational potentiality of themes. A Well-Traveled Road explores the diverse possibilities of the development of a single motive. I have incorporated certain principles of sonata form, although this music is more episodic in nature than three-part. It is foremost mono-thematic (the theme is first announced in the horns and trumpets). The idea then undergoes several permutations in the form of episodes, including a fleeting waltz, a form of which I am quite fond. The title of the piece itself is a metaphorical allusion to this process. The harmonic language in the work is predominantly tonal. By contemporary music standards, about one-half consonant and one-half dissonant. I do not prescribe to any type of harmonic system or any other such rationale in this work (or seldom in any of my recent work). I prefer using a more intuitive approach to harmony, reserving dissonance for spice and for enhancing the dramatic element of the music. Daniel Burwasser

The first version of Daniel Burwasser's Sonata for Piano was completed in May of 1987 and was premiered by Gary Hammond one year later at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York on May 2, 1988. Hammond performed it again later that month at Hunter College. It was later revised in 1998 after a performance given by Anahit Nersisian in Yerevan, Armenia. A further revision of the work from 2018 is represented here.

Ebb and Flow harks back to the composer’s years at the City University of New York. The work was completed in 1990 and revised in 2022 for this video score. A colorful and dramatic work, Ebb and Flow is based on two main themes: the first of which is heard at the very onset in the lower strings, and later, a more subdued and lyrical theme is presented. Transitions between these sections are fluid and contain moments of tension and resolution, highlighting the contrasts and interplay between the two states. Ultimately, Ebb and Flow as a musical composition aims to evoke a sense of movement, contemplation, and emotional resonance, capturing the essence of the natural ebb and flow phenomenon through the music. The piece also displays the composer’s stylistic tendencies for episodic writing, tender lyricism, frequently shifting textures and rhythmic drive .

Autumn was originally a poem written in Russian by the composer's grandmother (Genya Burwasser) shortly before her death in 1967.  An anonymous translation of the poem was discovered in the early summer of 1986 by the composer's father, who requested that the poem be set to music. The original version of the work was completed in early October of 1986 and was premiered in NYC in the Spring of 1987. The composition, which is in one continuous movement, evokes the eternal transition of nature during the autumn season, and thus the transition between life and death. The poem symbolizes the writer's own affliction while facing the bleakness of her final days. In the end, she accepted her fate, and the work, in its final bars, suggests a sense of that calm acceptance.

This is a newly revised 2020 edition of Autumn. Great effort was made to stay faithful to the original 1986 score.

NOTES on The Waiting Game

Waiting is hard.

The Waiting Game is a three-movement work for brass quintet depicting three different emotional scenarios one might endure while waiting for something good to happen. The Waiting Game can be applied to various situations in life where there is no control over the timing of an event and one must simply wait for it to unfold. 

The first movement, “Anticipation�, the first phase, takes the listener through the ambivalent feelings of both dread and positivity depending on the day. The 2nd movement, “Exaspiration�, is slow and expressive, representing time dragging on. This is the most frustrating period of the waiting process. The final movement, “Jubilation�, is celebratory and depicts a hopeful outcome from all the emotional hardships of waiting.

NOTES on Tears for a Dying Planet

Tears for a Dying Planet paints a musical picture of a troubled world. It broadly expresses all of my pent-up fears, anger and frustrations which continue to lay heavily on my mind as our world descends into unsavory and uncharted territory. These problems run the gamut; endless military conflicts, threats of nuclear war, xenophobia, racism, anti-Semitism, science denial, steep political divisions, mass shootings, and not least by any means, climate change leading to extreme weather conditions across the globe.

Tears for a Dying Planet is in a softly-played free form and contains several episodes which culminate into a forceful nine-note “death� chord representing grief and anger.  A single bar of recovery silence is offered honoring all who have suffered and continue to do so.

The snare drum provides crisp, sharp rhythms, while the tenor drum adds depth and resonance with its lower tones – even offering something reminiscent of a bass line. This work highlights the dynamic range and versatility of these two instruments. The five short duets represented here capture various moods and scenes borrowed from the composer’s wide range of influences from “Island Hop� to “Gigue�.

Caprice� for woodwind quintet was completed in February 2024, and as the title implies encapsulates the spirit of persistent transformation in both mood and tempo. The composition highlights the blending of several short thematic motives through the use of eighth note/quarter note rhythms as well as through dotted rhythms in various guises. These same patterns also appear in the slower sections where there is far less volatility. The softer moments of the work drastically reshape the piece for much needed repose.

Written in late 2020 in loving memory of the composer's father, Herman Burwasser, Kaleidoscope is a hauntingly beautiful, deliciously lyrical composition featuring several variegated sections enveloped by a common theme. Like the shifting patterns and colors in a kaleidoscope, different structural techniques are employed to create musical forms such as variations, repetitions, developments, and contrasts to shape the overall structure of the work.

These three poems by Ilsa Gilbert were chosen on the basis of their dramatic imagery and expressivity, and more importantly, their highly “musical� qualities. Traits that I find most attractive in Gilbert’s work. The idea to string these particular poems together was of my own volition, but the specific order in which they appear in the work came at the suggestion of the poet, who also came up with the apt title, TORRENTS. The mood of each song gradually progresses from cynicism to optimism. From the tormented struggle of Wild Beast to the process of aging and acceptance of death in Winter Leaves to renewal and the affirmation of life in The Mediterranean Sea. These themes are universal. TORRENTS evokes an abundance of emotions all derived from the human spirit.
