The poet, Bethany Swann, listened to his music and through that experience was able to create the lyrics that so perfectly flow in the songs – an impressive achievement. The nine-movement song cycle begins with In Memoriam, the most “pop music†sounding of the songs, with a simple lyrical line. Roses Through Barbed Wire follows – it is more aggressive and percussive with an active accompaniment to the voice. The third piece of the cycle, The Somnambulist, is in two parts: the first with long melodic lines over a minimalist accompaniment; the second, more chordal and lyrically active. The Struggle shows influences of “Americana†and has a purely instrumental middle section. The midway point of the cycle, Stained Glass, makes use of glowing chords in various modes. The sixth song is A Return, which contains thick textures and chordal accompaniment in support of the vocal part. Song of Returns introduces a slower pace and is imagined as an “impressionistic cowboy song†– if such a thing were to exist! The penultimate movement, Light Sources is a multi-part song having an ethereal middle section and an explosive instrumental ending. The cycle concludes with Northern Boundaries, which includes a hymn-inspired section at the end.

Virus was composed during and about the 2020-2021 COVID epidemic. The main details of this piece are: 1. Each instrumentalist plays one and only one note throughout the entire piece. There are no expression markings – only dynamics. There are no special techniques. Each performer is “self-isolatingâ€. 2. 48 instrumentalists – 24 violins, 10 violas, 8 cellos, 6 double basses. The entire ensemble covers four chromatic octaves. 3. Vibrato consistent across all instrumentalists. 4. No liberty with rhythm. Follow exactly as written. 5. This may be considered an etude – a study of volume. All instrumentalists should be consistent in their interpretation of each dynamic. pppp should be extremely quiet but still audible. 6. The change in volume for crescendos and decrescendos should be gradual – reaching end dynamic in a legato, smooth manner. 7. The visual of the dynamics in the full score – often depicts the program – like hieroglyphics. Or, in some cases, like the image of an organism viewed through a microscope. 8. Optional – performers may wear masks during performance. And, if space permits, have 6 feet social distancing between performers.

The Sonata for Flute and Piano is the longest and most complex work I have composed for Flute and Piano. My goal for this piece was to push myself as a composer, and to push both flautist and pianist to their absolute limits – both musically and technically. The flute is capable of much more than just being pretty – and in this work it depicts violence, drama, joy, sorrow and heroism. Extended techniques are used throughout the sonata (aire, percussive tonguing, pitch bends, harmonics and flutter tonguing) but always within a tonal framework. The first movement starts out peacefully, as if beginning a legend, with a folk-like and serene melody. The second and third themes are more percussive and rhythmical – the flute and piano engaging in a violent, interlaced dance in a section marked Allegro Swordfight. In the recapitulation, the first theme reappears in much more dramatic form. The second movement begins with a forceful march before a darker and more cabalistic middle section emerges. The movement builds to a formidable climax in the final measures. The third movement begins simply and quietly, offering a respite from the energy of the first two movements, and quoting themes from both of them. It then leads attacca (without pause) into the final movement, which surges forward relentlessly before a lyrical section provides the flute an opportunity to soar above wave-like arpeggios in the piano. The piece ends on an ethereal note, with flute and piano hovering near silence in their upper ranges.
