Just a Closer Walk With Thee is a beautiful spiritual arranged here for Solo Viola and Piano.Little is known of the origins of Just a Closer Walk With Thee, other than it was sung in African-American churches in the nineteenth century. National religious conventions in the 1930s gave the hymn a wider audience. Many versions were recorded in the 1940s and Just a Closer Walk With Thee was quickly adopted as a standard by the New Orleans Jazz revival.

It requires an accomplished accompanist and the the voice range is medium for either male or female, although it originally was written for a male singer (baritone). It is in 5/4 meter throughout with contrasting sections and a main opening theme repeated near the end. Included is a string ensemble arrangement of the song with full score and all the parts. The audio clip is the solo with piano accompaniment in an MP3 (Finale) and is a fair representation of the qualities of this song. It is suitable for most classical concerts or in recital.

This series has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of the ever-changing ensemble combinations that primary and secondary schools and other instrumental ensembles face.  Because certain instruments are more comfortable in playing in certain keys, each work will be offered in two keys. This should allow for the music director to choose the key most suitable for the instrumental combination. Each piece consists of five core instrumental parts: 2 treble, 1 alto, tenor and bass. All parts will have a number of transpositions suitable for the instruments that are capable of playing those parts, eg, Part 2 will have parts for violin, B flat clarinet and trumpet, and E flat alto sax.  This will save music directors' time in having to write out additional parts. Published by David Heywood (A0.910417).   You Stepped Out of a Dream is an exciting new samba arrangement of this familiar jazz standard for flute choir (piccolo, C flutes 1-5, alto and bass) with rhythm section (piano, bass, and drum set). The unique feature of this arrangement is that the piece opens with the flutes coming in in layers imitating the instruments of the Brazilian batucada, a substyle of samba that is made up of percussion instruments, along with the drum set. The melody is then presented with tight, crisp jazz harmonies, and opens up to a piano solo with flute backgrounds, and optional parts included for jazz flute soloist(s) as well. This is followed by a chorus of written out flute solis with the group split up into three groups that all finish together in time for the melody again. The piece finishes with an open repeat of the entire group playing the batucada rhythms with the drums, and a chance to get the audience involved with clapping or even dancing. Add the excitement of Brazilian Samba to your next concert!
