Small Ensemble Guitar,Low Voice,Medium Voice - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533911 Composed by David Warin Solomons. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 19 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3066951. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533911). Concert Note:The Five Poems of Melissanthi, in the English translation of Diana Maynard, comprise a complete vocal cycle of five poems set to music as a posthumoustribute by the composer to the Athenian poet Melissanthi (1910-1991),in the manner of the old tombeaux of the Baroque era, atradition also used by many composers of the first half of the 20th century. This composer confirms, with reference to his own experience of Melissanthi'spoetry these five from among her many poems have made a such a great impacton my composing that I felt the need to dedicate these musical pages to her.The evocative poetic expressions of Melissanthi, whose real name wasEve Chougia-Skandalaki, and the mysterious atmospheres invokedby David Solomons' music introduce the listener to an ethereal andmetaphysical dimension, allowing us a glimpse into the unknown and the intangible.A recurring theme, which unites the five lyrics by an invisible thread, isan incessant fluctuation between the real and the unreal, between the knownand the unknown and between reality and unreality. The inevitable abandonment of the mind to the seductive charms of thesurreal creates an extraordinary parallelism with lines from a great poet of the past…così tra questa/immensità s'annega il pensier mio:/e il naufragar m'è dolcein questo mare[…so in this/immensity my thoughts drown:/ and to be shipwrecked is sweetfor me in this sea.](Giacomo Leopardi, L'Infinito, 1819).Both the performance and the enjoyment of the Five Poems thereforerequire particular emotional involvement, in an overall picture where everysingle note is a tiny but essential constituent of a larger and more complexmusical architecture. The harmonic structure of the five compositions presentsa substantial homogenity of formulation even within the various rhythmicalsolutions selected, with their repeated returns to themes and chords. This creates an indissoluble unity, such that it would spoil the completenessof the whole cycle of compositions if it were broken.Alessandro BalsiminiTranslation by David W. Published by Geofonica Artistworks (A0.948697). Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in lead sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. (NOTE: A Bb leadsheet is also available.) The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track features Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Jazz Thoughts for the months of January through July have thus far been released. COMMENTS FROM MAJOR CRITIC REVIEWS OF MARK MASSEY: Mark Massey is awfully good. His friendly, lyrical, melodic piano has a sound unto itself, bop and post-bop influenced, contemporarily informed, and languishing solidly in the modern mainstream. ...This is a very good trio that is together in many aspects of jazz expressionism. In larger, more interactive settings, Massey proves he has ideas that work well. ...Massey's talent being exposed is a breakthrough. A majority of jazz listeners should find this a worthwhile purchase, and a keeper.  Recommended.----MICHAEL G. NASTOS, ALL MUSIC GUIDE (CD review of Acoustic Piano International) Mark Massey is an excellent straight-ahead pianist who often appears in the L.A. area. ...his playing is consistently appealing. String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1502478 Composed by Cecil Frances Alexander. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Traditional. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #1078262. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1502478). Once in Royal David's City is an essential and beloved Christmas carol for several reasons:Historical significance: The hymn was written in 1848 by Cecil Frances Alexander as part of a collection called Hymns for Little Children. The traditional opening of a famous service: Since 1919, this carol has been prominent as the opening processional hymn for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, held on Christmas Eve at King's College Chapel, Cambridge. The BBC World Service and American Public Media broadcast this service worldwide, giving the hymn global exposure.Unique performance tradition: At King's College, the first verse is traditionally sung as a solo by a boy chorister, chosen by the choirmaster just moments before the service begins. This adds an element of anticipation and showcases young talent.Theological content: The hymn tells the story of Christ's birth and childhood, emphasizing His divinity and humanity. It connects the nativity story to broader Christian theology, making it both a narrative and a teaching tool.Musical qualities: The tune IRBY, composed by Henry John Gauntlett, is widely regarded as beautiful and memorable. Despite its relative simplicity, it has been praised for its intimate scale and inspired melody.Widespread use: Beyond its famous use at King's College, the hymn has become popular in churches of various denominations worldwide, especially during Christmas services.Cultural impact: The hymn has become deeply associated with Christmas in many English-speaking countries, evoking nostalgia and religious sentiment for many listeners. In essence, Once in Royal David's City is essential not just for its content but for its role in Christmas traditions, its educational value, and its ability to connect people to the holiday's religious aspects through music.
