This beautiful and popular operatic duet is an excellent way to introduce students to the genre.  It is useful for recitals, chamber music and concert experience.  Listening skills regarding tone quality. Intonation. rhythmic accuracy, articulation and musical interpretation can be improved through his piece.  It can also serve as an example of Romantic era music and serve as a bridge to the study of historical, cultural context.

The hymn-tune WIR PFLÜGEN was composed by J.A.P. Schulz (1747-1800), who trained under J. S. Bach's student Kirnberger. Today the tune is most often sung at Thankgiving to the text We plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land. The Plowman's Rag transmogrifies Schulz's tune into ragtime, a style the German composer surely never imagined. Appropriate for a prelude, postlude or recital—in an unbuttoned setting.

In collaboration with the Philadelphia Classical Symphony and

director, Karl Middleman and Partners in Distance Learning, a music composition project was launched in 2005 for students in Pennsylvania. I created an instructional web site called HOW TO WRITE A FANFARE. Students from around the state worked through the program and sent us their final projects. The committee selected the best ones submitted and we brought the students and their families to Philadelphia where the Philadelphia Classical Symphony performed their pieces on a public concert.
