According to tradition, the Bard David lived in a house called Y Garreg Wen (The White Rock) in a remote situation in North Wales. He was commonly called by his Christian name followed by the name of his house, a common custom in Wales, and one which survives to the present day.Like many other Welsh Bards, David was also a harpist, and is reputed to have had his harp continually at his side. On his death-bed, he is supposed to have asked that his harp be once more placed in his hands in order that he might play just one more tune.The melody he played was afterwards called by his name Dafydd Y Garreg Wen (David of the White Rock), and this same melody was performed on a single Welsh harp at his funeral, as was his dying wish.The Welsh words were subsequently added by Ceiriog Hughes in the nineteenth century. Words and melody are now inseparably linked, and are together widely known and regarded as one of the most popular of Welsh Traditional Songs.Richard Bowen (1963).

The African-American spiritual Little David, Play on Your Harp stokes the imagination of every child who has ever been bullied: Little David was a shepherd boy. He killed Goliath and he shouted for joy. This fantasy for solo piano tries to capture the many moods of the biblical story of the young David, from reflective moments with his herd of sheep to his jubilant triumph over the archetypal big bully. The piece can be performed in either church or recital settings. .

This sequence and melody was inspired by a poem written by a friend called Otto Wanke, who was going through the teenage angst of splitting up with the first girl he loved. The title (Feuer und Wasser = Fire and Water) refers to the idea that these two elements are incompatible, but the music (in minor mode with occasional hints of Dorian) is a simple lament rather than a musical description of the elements in question. The music was originally written as a song for alto voice with classical guitar accompaniment (to which I have added an English singing translation). It has since been rearranged for various instruments with guitar (cor anglais, flute, clarinet, viola, violin) and also as a more sophisticated version for flute quartet and for wind quartet. In all cases the pdf file contains score and parts. The sound samples are electronic previews, except the original song which is performed by the composer. Arrangement of the old English Christmas ditty in which the singers wander through the town singing and - in this version at least! - getting somewhat drunk on the contents of the Wassail bowl.
The tempo and the modes change as the performers progress, and, of course, the tune is given to each instrument in turn.
This arrangement makes much use of the medieval (and middle Eastern) style of consecutive fourths.
