Here I used every piano register to create contrasts. It begins with the sun rising over the horizon with piano tremolo in a high register almost as a dew dripping from the grass, impressionistic melody in the middle register, and more forceful intervals in the lower register as a sign, that something majestic awaits. The next part is an innocent, lightsome fugue with baroque elements, that ends on a minor scale, creating suspense and uncertainty. After a little melancholic section in Largo (slow tempo), the storm has finally started. Thunder - Dramatic octaves in the lower register with glimpses of melody from the intro turn into a tempestuous dance with arpeggios in the left hand and somewhat sweet melody in the right hand. The last section is a calm after the storm. Little raindrops falling from the roofs in the upper register create the melody from the intro as if reminiscing of how joyful was the beginning of the day. The piece finishes with a feeling of unfulfillment and expectation of what surprises the new day will bring.

Hailing from the The Oxford Book of Carols this German plainsong melody—from the Piae Cantones, 1583—has made its way into strong choral and worship traditions at Advent/Christmas.Of all the current texts and arrangements available, this version honors Holst’s unison accompanied setting in an unexpected subtle jazz styling, with the hope of bringing additional range to its established place in advent literature (both in terms of style and in appeal to a variety of age groups). And, On This Day Earth Shall Ring, translated by Jane M. Its relatively flat topography and high elevation lead to intense winds and unpredictable storms bestowing the plateau's colorful moniker. Contrary to the title, the music reflects a compilation of impressions from multiple visits over a decade’s time, gathered with my son’s first-hand reports of overnight stays, rather than a single day’s experience. My original objective for the music was to portray the stark and stony landscape alternatively caressed and buffeted in a stew of breezes and gales, sunshine and storms. However, as I was writing the piece it became apparent the true theme of the music is rather a daily high-altitude drama pitting light versus darkness, a drama staged on the plateau’s rocks, meadows, streams, and lakes depicting a perpetually shifting kaleidoscope of distinctive lighting unlike any I have experienced elsewhere. The transparent, thin air reveals indigo blue skies and scalding-white clouds overarching stunning vistas stretching a hundred miles or more. The landscape glitters under the radiance of high latitude sunlight. The only word I can think of to describe the golden glow of sunbeams slicing through a summer snow squall is ethereal. The utter absence of artificial light makes for the darkest night skies and brightest stars one can experience on earth.

The American epic war movie, The Longest Day, was released in 1962 and filmed in black and white, It is based on Cornelius Ryan's 1959 non-fiction book of the same name. It is about the D-Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944.  The picture opens with a view of the beach and the sounds of the waves washing ashore.  There is a lone helmet lying upside down on the beach, and over the sounds of the sea, we hear the motif from Beethoven's 5th Symphony, the dot-dot-dash of morse code signaling V, for victory.  Throughout the film we hear variations on the theme of the march which culminates in the playing of the full march as the credits roll. Here scored for concert band is the march from The Longest Day, as written by Paul Anka.
