Tenor Voice,Vocal Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.730826

By Debbie Allen. By Debbie Allen. Arranged by Debbie Allen. Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Spiritual. 22 pages. Nottingham Scores #339083. Published by Nottingham Scores (A0.730826).

Art reflects what we see and hear, as well as what we imagine. Music is sonic art. The sequence of sounds we hear spark our interest, imagination, and emotions. This vocal music, with instrumental accompaniment, is meant to represent the wonder of the clouds in the atmosphere above us. The text expresses our understanding of the purpose of clouds, as well as our curiosity about how they form and how they look as we gaze up at the sky. The shift between major and minor keys represents the dynamic nature of the clouds. Sometimes clouds are welcome. Sometimes clouds are a hindrance. Sometimes clouds create dangerous situations. The vocal part may be sung by a soprano or a tenor. Dramatic interpretation is encouraged and welcome, allowing the artists to share their relationship with clouds.

T.I.M.E., a work for SATB Choir, expresses the mystery of time, how it passes, how we use it and how it grants new beginnings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have experienced time and what is important to us in different ways. Certainly, there have been moments of uncertainty, anxiety, even panic over danger of contracting the virus, the long-term effects of the virus and the loss of life. In isolation, awaiting further instructions, we have had time to reflect, prepare and imagine. We have had to manage life with new guidelines and restrictions, while trying to keep ourselves and others safe. This work attempts to put time in perspective, with a message of hope for recovery, and a better understanding of how to move forward with passion and grace. The message is not just for life in a pandemic, but for life, in general. Hopefully, this work can stand the “test of time”, finding a meaningful place in the repertoire.

Newton Rocks, music for unison or 2-part choir, is an arts integration project combining music and science. Choir is not only fun, but educational – Ha! We insert studies of people, places and things into a fun learning tool. Sometimes the information in songs is fictional, sometimes, based on fact. The story of Isaac Newton, one of the greatest physicists, and the apple tree is a legend, but holds some truth. Certainly, Isaac Newton is credited with theories of gravity, mass and motion, concepts that are still supported in the study of physics today. Choir students will enjoy telling this story, adding a little drama, here and there, while learning a bit of history and science. This might even guide them to do further research. The accompaniment can be simple or a little more complicated, based on the availability of an accompanist. Leave out some notes if you must. The students and audience will still enjoy the rockin’ beat. The upper voice (soprano) melody can be performed in unison, but a harmony part (alto) is included, if desired.

Mystery of the Hills is an S.A.T.B. choral work describing the wonder of the Flint Hills, a region in East Central Kansas.  I’m not a native Kansan, but whenever I drive through this area, I am enthralled by the infinite sense of expanse and gently rolling terrain. Geologists believe there was an inland seaway that covered central North America starting 290 million years ago. Over time, alternating layers of hard limestone and softer shale rocks formed. It is believed erosion caused the varied elevations of terrain, unique to the slopes of the Flint Hills. These surface layers of limestone and chert prevented the settler’s ability to farm, which in turn preserved the integrity of the soil. Today, the prairie grasses can reach 10 feet tall if not managed.  The rich grasses are prime for feeding livestock. This music attempts to provide images of traveling through the Flint Hills today, while imagining changes over eons of time, due to weather and eventually, human interaction.  Generally, the upper voices provide the imagery and some history, while the lower voices describe a bedrock foundation.  Describing the rock foundation found in the Flint Hills is also a metaphor for human strife and struggle as man, among living flora and fauna, interact with the area. The vocal ranges and harmonies are accessible for young ensembles, whether in development or with years of experience.

Wish That I Could Fly is a work for 2-part choir (optional 3-part). This song was generated from an arts integration project for sixth graders that included music, physics, history, literature, and visual art. Students were studying the physics of flight in science class, and they were able to collaborate with scientists and astronauts from the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS. The collaboration included video meetings about space flight, which helped students compose songs, a script, and scenery for an original musical. Research included the history of flight in the United States, particularly the work of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Students helped compose the lyrics for Wish That I Could Fly in class, and the melodies were inspired by the words. The triplet rhythm helps create motion throughout. Perpetual motion in the piano accompaniment represents the flow and fluctuation of air currents, supporting the lyrics, which describe various ways to fly.

Imagine the Future, Space Travel 2.0, a work for 2-part Treble Choir, encourages students to imagine what impact the future of space flight and exploration will have on our lives. I remember watching the lunar landing on my little black and white TV screen in 1969. Yes, I’m that old. My imagination and awe soared as I considered changes that would happen as a result. Fast forward to 2022. We have a space station that has been orbiting the Earth since the year 2000, continuously occupied with astronauts and scientists. We have multiple telescopes, surpassing our galaxy, sending photos and information back to Earth. We have rovers on Mars. We are sending civilians into space on privately owned rockets! The future is bright. Enjoy the simplicity of initial harmonies and melodies that become increasingly complex as this music for choir develops to an exciting climax, ending in luscious chords that emphasize the wonderment of space.
