Instrumentation:FluteClarinet in BbHorn in FViolinViolaCelloDoiuble bassSeptet, opus 77 … “Variations on a Shaker Tune� was commissioned by Mark Ludwig for his educational series in the Western Berkshires of Massachusetts.  When he approached me about writing a “theme and variations� work for the purpose of illustrating musical form, texture and orchestration to a young audience, I thought what better thing to do than to use as a theme a Shaker hymn from near Hancock Shaker Village.  As it turns out Deborah Leah Rentz, a mezzo-soprano who is Mark’s assistant at the Terezín Music Foundation, has been researching into and transcribing from a Shaker Hymnal, ca. 1850, created and compiled for the Hancock Shaker Village.  (Deborah’s project is sponsored by the Hancock Shaker Village and the Richmond Performing Series.)    So I asked her to put on a DAT tape (those were the days before CDs or digital distribution… ) a number of these hymns for me.  I immediately fell in love with the very first one on the tape, “Grateful Remembrance.�  It had a soulful, melancholic core; an almost “bluesy� feeling to it.  In this performance, Deborah will sing the hymn a cappella at the beginning.    Then, the seven variations will follow.I. Grateful Remembrance … An instrumental version of the hymn.II. Grateful Chanting … Featuring the B-flat clarinet in a pentatonic “chant� setting.III. Grateful Funk … The “bluesiness� of the hymn is transformed into a funk riff.IV. Tango Remembered … A four-note fragment from the hymn is transformed into a sultry tango.V. Sambinha agradecida … The yearning “flat 6th� in the hymn is transformed into a samba Carmen Miranda would’ve have liked.VI. Anmerkung der Komponistin      Das Vaterunser (Global Version) ist eine zeitgenössische Fassung des Vaterunsers, in der pentatonische Tonleitern und Kombinationen aus traditionellen und nicht-traditionellen Harmonien und Rhythmen verwendet werden. Das Gebet selbst ist ein Plädoyer dafür, dass Gottes Wille in jedem von uns getan wird. Infolgedessen sollte während der gesamten Arbeit eine aufrichtige und ernsthafte Stimmung im Vordergrund stehen. Die meisten Christen kennen das Gebet auswendig in ihrer eigenen Sprache und es wird heute von jeder christlichen Tradition verwendet. Ich habe die globale Version für drei verschiedene Sprachen geschrieben: Englisch, Deutsch und Koreanisch.      Diese Hymne ist im Stil des Responsorial-Gesangs gehalten: Ein Solist singt eine Linie, der der Chor oder die Klavierbegleitung folgen. Jede Passage wird auf ihre eigene Weise entwickelt, aber die übliche Technik, die in dieser Arbeit verwendet wird, ist die systematische Verwendung von Wiederholungen, die dem Vorhandenen neue Texturschichten hinzufügen (z. B. mm.11–18 und mm. 19–33). Diese Technik beginnt mit einer einfachen Figur, die einige Male mit leichten Abweichungen wiederholt wird. Das Klavier mit einer einfachen viertaktigen Passage führt in den neuen Abschnitt und die neue Zeit ein. Dann treten Chor, Solist und Klavier im leicht modifizierten Call-and-Response Stil auf. Die verwendeten Rhythmen in mm. 27–31 sind eine Variation von Gutgeori jang dan, einem der traditionellen koreanischen Rhythmen, die diese globale Version einzigartig machen.      Der letzte Abschnitt, der Gott Ehre macht, ist die Doxologie, in der vertraute Akkorde und Kadenzen plötzlich zu ungewohnter Harmonie führe, um die Ehrfurcht und das Staunen widerzuspiegeln, die zum Ende von „Amen in D-Dur führen. Every beginning piano student wants to play Rudolph!   This easy piano version uses strategically placed Alpha-Notes, printed chord names for the intro, and only quarter, half and whole notes for rhythm.  Although it is simplified, it retains the harmony and melody of the original.  Careful fingering is included which make the places it moves out of five finger position easier.  The left hand of the verse and chorus is almost entirely in Low C position, and it can easily be played without the intro if desired.  (I suggest teaching the Intro by rote).   This was arranged for first and second year students who were in Faber Level 1 or Alfred books 1B.   .

This is a very easy piano version of the first section of the Beatles Birthday song.   It's great for teaching the basics of a rock I IV V pattern, with its well-known, fun baseline.   The left hand is written out with Alpha-Notes as it goes beyond the reading notes for many first year piano students.  The right hand is standard notation but only has two notes in the melody.   A teaching suggestion would be to start by learning the Left Hand bass line alone.    .
