The dynamics of the original are retained in my arrangement, but the fingering is left to the players... Playing the lower parts up the neck will give a rich, cello-like, sound, but a first position performance will be robust and will use many familiar guitar shapes.This is a charming, gentle, pastoral piece and the sweet sound of the guitar suits it well.Those UK players of a certain age might just remember that this music introduced The Woodentops, a children’s string-puppet TV series which ran in black and white from 1955 till 1957, and was regularly repeated until 1973.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

There are some x-headed notes - simply clap your hands together on the beat and I am sure the audience will join in - they used to when the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra played it - frequently failing to clap at the right time at all!Guitars 2 and 3 are the easiest lines - perfect for the less-experienced players in a mixed ability group. Guitar 4 has a fun and funky bass line. Guitar 1 goes quite high, but I have presented the notes at pitch and also in 8va notation so that your reading of the “on-the-body-notes� is clear and error-free. Since then I’ve performed it many times in concert with my Guitar Workshop, and it’s always particularly well received.The arpeggios and countermelodies are inspired by the repeating sequences in Pachelbel’s Canon, and they end up providing a rich and totally unexpected accompaniment to a verse and chorus of the famous Christmas Carol 'The First Nowell'.This piece is just perfect as a special item in a Christmas concert, because the title conceals the surprise in the piece - each phase brings in another guitar part, making the piece build slowly before the final guitar launches into the well-known carol. The parts are easy and suitable for an ensemble with limited experience or one with limited chances to rehearse. In a mixed ability ensemble, there’s something for everyone; in a school guitar group, the teacher can take the Guitar 5 part if no-one in the group is comfortable in fifth position - all the other parts are first position.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

Visit my website (below) to easily find the other version.This fantastic piece was written as an integral part of the film 'While I Live', and such is the power and emotion in the music, it has achieved a recognition that has far outlasted the film.My arrangement for two guitars captures all of the original, fiendishly difficult, piano composition, but uses the sweet tone of the guitar to add quality, rather than quantity, to the notes, creating a soundscape that works effectively and makes a wonderful concert piece lasting almost 4 minutes.The centre section has a simpler accompaniment than the original to avoid an overly fussy and unsatisfactory sound. Elsewhere the accompaniment is less rhythmically busy than the original, yet the chords are retained.There are two arrangements in this one edition...Version 1 allocates the music to the players as if they were the left and right hands of the piano piece - ideal for a duo in which one player is technically stronger than the other (for example a student/teacher duet).Version 2 swaps the roles around at the phrase boundaries and suits a well-matched duo.The choice of which you play is yours...The arpeggios are fingered because they generally only work well in one position. The melody, by contrast, is unfingered; it is chromatic and so there is no place on the neck where all the notes are accessible. The top line as written is intermediate, but there are a few optional “ossia� bars that make the line early intermediate. There’s also an optional bass line for conventional guitar or bass guitar and that’s supplied in treble and bass clefs. The bass line will suit a beginner, but the piece also works fine without it. There is an “improvisation� section in the middle with call and response lines to add interest for players and audience alike.In a large ensemble it works well to have both top parts plus bass and octave bass lines playing - it makes a massive wall of sound!This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as HAGO did!
