The middle parts could be taken in a variety of positions, and I have left the fingering for you to choose. However, the audience included not only the most authoritative music critics in the country but also Queen Margherita, a great music lover. It was a success from its opening notes. Following Stagno's rendition of the Siciliana behind the curtain the audience leaped to their feet with a thunderous applause not heard for many years. Mascagni took 40 curtain calls.The intermezzo is an orchestra interlude that most people recognise, that far fewer can name, and virtually no-one can identify the composer. My arrangement was inspired by hearing the original orchestral version at the funeral of Bill, a fellow guitarist, and this is my tribute to him - an arrangement for 4 guitars.In order to make the very best of the compass of the guitar, I’ve had to change to pitch a little, but it makes it all the more playable.The tempo is slow - really slow and relaxed. I’ve not added fingering, because although much can be played in low positions, you may well find that there is plenty of time to take much of the piece up the neck, where the guitar really comes alive.I hope you enjoy performing this!

PRESTO (Mozart K522) The Horse Of The Year Show TV Theme - 3 GUITARS OR LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This is part of the fourth movement - Presto - of Mozart’s K522 for string quartet and two horns. It’s commonly known as “A Musical Joke�, though the correct translation is “Some Musical Fun�. In the UK, a sanitised version with added drumbeat and electric bass was used as the TV theme music to “The Horse Of The Year Show�. My arrangement has just some of the thematic material of the original, yet still fills a music stand. An optional repeat extends the piece to a little over 3 minutes. Mozart intended the piece as a showcase of how NOT to write, and the Presto contains some extraordinary and modern-sounding key changes as well as some rather odd counterpoint. The original Presto finishes with an unexpected burst into 4 different keys, all sounding together after one of the longest build-ups to an ending you’ll ever hear. My setting for 3 guitars ends in 3 of the 4 keys that Mozart burst into. Most audiences would probably associate this with a catastrophic disaster, so I’ve included a second ending that stays in key for a nice happy ending! Rather than the isolated quavers (eighth notes) and rests, I’ve used staccato marks to make a version that is much easier to read yet has exactly the same articulation. I hope you enjoy this piece!

The first one is perhaps the most famous, but the others are charming too. Here we have all four plus an introduction too.My guitar trio arrangement is based on a facsimile of an original piano reduction with extra countermelodies to thicken the texture.This composition has been arranged by many people to be played on piano or by full orchestra, and quite often one or more of the waltzes is omitted, or they are played in a different order or a different number of times. It’s fair to say there are probably a dozen variants! More than that, each arranger seems to take it upon themselves to write an introduction. In keeping with that tradition, I have penned an introduction too... it’s a mysterious, slightly slow, statement of the first theme, which, as the first Waltz starts, comes alive at tempo.In this particular arrangement, I’ve made sure everyone has the tune at some point - with about five minutes of music here, it’s not right that some parts are in the limelight and others aren’t - music is for sharing! At phrase boundaries, the roles of tune, countermelody and accompaniment all move round.In concert, one might consider omitting one of the Waltzes if time is at a premium.

Since then I’ve performed it many times in concert, and it’s always particularly well received.The arpeggios and countermelodies are inspired by the repeating sequences in Pachelbel’s Canon, and they end up providing a rich and totally unexpected accompaniment to a verse and chorus of the famous Christmas Carol 'The First Nowell'.This piece is just perfect as a special item in a Christmas concert, because the title conceals the surprise in the piece - each phase brings in another guitar part, making the piece build slowly before the final guitar launches into the well-known carol. The parts are easy and suitable for an ensemble with limited experience or one with limited chances to rehearse. In a mixed ability ensemble, there’s something for everyone; in a school guitar group, the teacher can take the Guitar 6 part if no-one in the group is comfortable in fifth position - all the other parts are first position.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

It's based on a version I wrote for Hampshire Guitar Orchestra which used 4 sizes of classical guitar. This arrangement has been re-worked to suit a conventional classical guitar quartet or large ensemble.It's easy to play and locks together well. Guitar 3 requires a Capo on the seventh fret (or an Alto Guitar could be used instead).
