Derek Hasted writes When I ran my Guitar Workshop, we closed their annual Summer Charity Concert with this piece - “We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday” - because that’s exactly what we’re about to do!

As I write this, it's early in the summer of 2020 and the Coronavirus Lockdown is easing just a little here in the UK. There’s talk of people being able to go on holiday once more, so what a perfect time it is to publish my arrangement for you to enjoy too!

Set for 4 guitars, it works well with a mixed ability ensemble, as the parts are of slightly different complexities. But it’s well within reach of an Intermediate adult or school ensemble (with or without the teacher!)

Much of the music is accessible in first position and it’s even possible to split Guitar Three into two lines to suit novice players with minimal experience.

Derek Hasted writes This delightful melody features in the film Mary Poppins, where its beauty, simplicity and elegance really make this humble piece shine out.

My arrangement for flute and guitar includes all the verses and the instrumental break, wrapped up in an accessible arrangement that feels comfortable for both players. The guitar part is intermediate, the flute part is very slightly easier.

I have included some fingering for the guitar part so that it’s clear which positions are used, and there are skeleton dynamics that reflect the different textures in the accompaniment. Please feel free to add more to make the performance yours.

My arrangements for two guitars include all the verses and the instrumental break, wrapped up in two accessible arrangements that feel comfortable for both players.

There are two arrangements in this one edition...

The student/teacher version gives one player the vocal line - one note at once - and the other player an accompaniment comprising chords, arpeggios and melody.

The performance version swaps roles at phrase boundaries, giving more interest for players and audience alike, and which makes the two parts equal in standard.

I have included some fingering for the accompaniment so that it’s clear which positions are used, and there are skeleton dynamics that reflect the different textures in the arrangement. Please feel free to add more to make the performance yours.

gentle sound.

BLUE MOON - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensemble

Derek Hasted writes Over the years, this piece has been arranged in so many styles.

I’ve taken my inspiration from Laurindo Almeida’s Solo Guitar arrangement, which has some lovely and interesting chords and a lot of movement in the inner voice. But having just one guitar means that the inner voice sometimes runs out of steam, and the bass voice jumps around from one octave to another. It always left me feeling there was a bit more music to be had amongst the notes.

My arrangement, for 4 intermediate players (some of the parts are a little easier) is in a different key entirely. Spreading the workload allows a little more action to go on under the tune.

Guitar 4 is 6=D, and it’s also supplied in bass clef (for a normally tuned contra guitar or similar). Either or both lines can be played.

Although this can be played in swing (shuffle) rhythm, a straight rhythm allows a more relaxed and romantic feel to the piece, but feel free to try either...

The piece has recently reappeared in Air Supply’s 2018 Album, and it’s been covered by Johnny Logan, Westlife, John Barrowman, Cliff Richard and many others.

At the time it was released, its final note was the longest-held note for a male pop singer, a record not beaten until 1983.

IN AN OCTOPUS'S GARDEN - GUITAR DUET (one of two arrangements)

Derek Hasted writes This wonderfully upbeat piece of music makes a great concert piece or encore. It contains all the material from one of the recordings of this piece, including the intro and the instrumental break in the middle of the piece.

My arrangement is at the Intermediate level. The accompaniment comprises a ragtime swinging bass which makes the piece motor along. The tune is handed from player to player, switching at each phrase boundary, and appears in three different octaves during the piece, while still remaining on the playable part of the guitar neck.

There are no repeats in this piece, and that allows changes to the texture in the successive verses.

I’ve performed this piece in concert and it’s always been a great crowd-pleaser.

I have also published a version which suits a student/teacher duo or a duo of mixed abilities which is a little easier to play. Find it easily via my website (below) in the duet category.
