The piece is dedicated to the teacher who instructed the class all the 4 years until their graduation.One of the first exercises in the education of a designated conductor is the so called conducting chain, which is a seamless sequence of seven bars with individual lengths of 1 to 7 quarter notes in ascending order. The conducting chain represents one of the basic skills necessary for conducting an ensemble or wind band. For this reason exactly these conducting chain is incorporated in the middle part of the piece.The PDF contains the score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. No duplication of parts necessary - so, just print and go. The composition encodes the donor’s first name (praenomen) as a musical motif, which is stated before the start of each piece. I also enjoyed imagining ways that each piece could reflect an aspect of each subject: 1. Barbara is a classy woman who I imagine has quite a social calendar; 2. Rachel manages three energetic children (two are my students) yet remains cool-headed; 3. John is a former adult student with an interest in new age piano music; 4. Marjorie is an effervescent personality and a logical thinker; 5. Angela is a thoughtful friend and is full of pep; and 6. Jean is a fellow church pianist who enjoys that genre’s sentimental style. These compositions can, of course, be enjoyed for their own merits.

It also serves as a sketch that is loosely based on some aspect about the subject: 1. The classical-style Katies kleine Sonatine is a pun on Katie Cline and Eine kleine Nachtmusik; 2. Garrett is a proudly unusual character and his piece is vaguely atonal at times; 3. Jennie is a generous and deep soul, in a way that reminded me of Beethoven’s Andante cantabile from the Pathétique sonata; 4. Barbara’s second commission was an occasion for me to explore a Chopinesque etude style and unlikely harmonies; 5. Jamie is boisterous, fiercely devoted, strong-minded, and plays ukulele. The pieces can, of course, be enjoyed on their own merit.

The piece is styled after some of the shorter pieces of Robert Schumann, with their piquant dissonances and tight construction. It is designated as Early Romantic because of the relative lack of variety in the figuration, but it is not Classical, as the harmonic movements are not the usual progressions one sees in Mozart or Schubert. Duration is about 1 min, 45 secs.
