Bach’s cantata Herz un Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), BWV 147. The original scoring was for trumpet, oboes, two violins, basso continuo, and chorus. The melody is instantly recognizable and has been featured in countless films, recordings, and TV shows including Downtown Abbey, The Minority Report, The Muppet Show, the album Switched-On Bach by Moog-synthesizer artist Wendy Carlos, and the song Lady Linda by The Beach Boys. It is also found on most Top-100 lists of All-Time Classical Music Favorites. Two arrangements are included: The Complete Version is the entire cantata and is just over four minutes long. This version is perfect for worship services and recitals. The Short Version is a much simpler arrangement that is ideal for Weddings. It conveniently repeats sixteen measures so it can be as short as one minute (perhaps for a candle lighting ceremony), and may be repeated as needed if the processional takes longer than expected, or for any situation where you need to vamp.

Originally scored for choir, trumpet, violin and basso continuo, it was written in 1723 for the church of St Thomas in Leipzig where Bach was employed. This version is scored for Two Violas. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The famous melody in 9/8 alternates with the slow 4-part chorale sections. All players will enjoy experiencing the rich texture of Bach’s harmony. The overall performance time is around three minutes if played at the faster tempo that Bach preferred. The sample recording is from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version of this duet. The complete performance on youtube is from the Clarinet version. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to introduce 9/8 rhythms.
