Swan Hennessy, an Irish-American composer born in 1866 and spent much of his life in France, was heavily influenced by his Celtic heritage.  His Petit Trio Celtique, Op. 52 incorporates lively and spirited melodies that evoke the traditional music of Ireland, accompanied by rich harmonies and rhythmic patterns reminiscent of Celtic folk dances like jigs and reels. As the work's title suggests, Petit Trio Celtique has a more intimate and less formal character compared to larger chamber compositions. This is a march and calls for using the lower half of the bow.  Here the bow hair is more taught and produces a heavy and somehat coarse sound. Given the nature of the piece, the challenge is to control the bowing and avoid producing a tone that is too scratchy and harsh.  In the section where the upperstrings accompany with staccato open fifths, care should be taken to bounce the bow lightly enough to allow the legato melody in the lower strings to flourish.  The pizzicato section is a delightful contrast which offers practice in switching to and from arco and pizzicato. Finally, keeping an even tempo throughout despite regularly occurring rhythms is consistent with the piece's title.

The Six Fugues on the Name BACH, Op. 60 was Schumann's only work composed explicitly for the organ (or the pedal piano). Schumann composed this work in 1845, late in his career, as he turned to more conventional musical forms like the fugue with encouragement from his wife, Clara.
 
The work uses the four-note B-A-C-H motive, which Schumann used to incorporate Bach's name into the music symbolically. The fugues demonstrate Schumann's mastery of the fugal form despite his reputation as a quintessential Romantic composer. This deeply moving arrangement with its sweet and subtle harmonies, can be used on its own in performance, or with one or two other O Carolan arrangements on either side. A famous melody, by the great Irish harp composer, it is given very sympathetic and sensitive treatment. The tune is mostly played on 1st violin whilst the accompaniment is always varied and interesting, enhancing the beauty of the original composition. Despite some high notes it is suitable for students and amateur quartets.
