The first is a beautiful metal tree sculpture on the campus of HPU, which symbolizes the university’s holistic approach to learning. Whenever I see the sculpture, it reminds me of Shel Silverstein’s classic book The Giving Tree, which has just celebrated its 50th anniversary and provided the 2nd source of inspiration for the composition. The work breaks down into five main sections – an introduction & theme, which sets the mood and provides the primary melodic and motivic ideas, and a short set of four variations, each corresponding to the four gifts given to the boy by the tree.

Published by BJE Music (A0.750927). I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In) is a traditional and popular Christmas carol from England. The earliest printed version of I Saw Three Ships is from the 17th century, possibly Derbyshire, and was also published by William Sandys in 1833. The lyrics mention the ships sailing into Bethlehem, but the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea about 20 miles (32 km) away. The reference to three ships is thought to originate in the three ships that bore the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Another possible reference is to Wenceslaus II, King of Bohemia, who bore a coat of arms Azure three galleys argent. Another suggestion is that the ships are actually the camels used by the Magi, as camels are frequently referred to as ships of the desert. Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749204). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfUzzRnPptQ  ‘Kissing You’ was written for the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet by Des’ree Weekes and Tim Atack, with the gorgeous string arrangements by Craig Armstrong. It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for string quartet, I also have an arrangement on Sheet Music Plus, for female singer and string quartet backing. The Quartet version can be found on my Skinny Black Dogs Youtube Channel, by typing in ‘Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You’. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. As usual, the first violin has the hardest part in trying to sustain the slow melody with a good vibrato, but my bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is some double stopping, in order to get all the necessary notes into those beautiful chords which thickens the texture, but almost all of it has an open string as one of the notes. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my Youtube recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. There is also a cello solo in fourth position at bar 14 including the high harmonic A. There needs to be room for some rubato in the song and the lead needs to be taken from whomever has the tune!
