Diana Mascari's Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano is a long-awaited composition from her catalog.
It is the first piece which features the alto sax and with piano accompaniment that she has written (completed in January 2024. The movements are: I. Swing, II. Introspection, III. Beguine and the total duration is approximately 11'40.
In addition to the jazz influence so characteristic of Ms. Mascari's work, this sonata is the reflects the love she has for classical works for this instrument. In addition to four saxophone quartets (one with pipe organ), a piece for Tenor Saxophone and pipe organ, Diana composed a concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra which was premiered in Switzerland in the late 1990s. Sonata for Flute and Piano is a four movement 15 minute work that explores a variety of moods as suggested by the titles of its movements:

I. Urban Frenzy, II. Serenity, III. Fiesta Fantasia, IV Introduction and Finale

At times the piano and flute work in partnership, unison or counterpoint. At other times, the piano accompaniment forms a rhythmic foundation above which the flute flies from here to there. Composer Diana Mascari has been a jazz pianist for more than 40 years, and her chamber music always reflects this influence.

Suite for Flute and Guitar is a three movement work which explores different musical styles:

I. Samba, II. Pas de deux, III. Swing.
Composed in 2003, this 16-minute composition was a big hit at the Boston Guitar Society's annual convention in 2005 when it was performed by the Ciraldo Duo.
The Guitar part was edited by Boston guitarist and teacher Berit Strong who gave the premiere. As a result, all guitarists can feel confident that the piece is ready for performance.

Three Sacred Songs was originally composed Flute, Tenor Voice, Cello and Piano. This version replaces the tenor voice with the clarinet so that it can be performed instrumentally. Please contact me if you would like to perform the vocal version.
For this composition, I took the words from three traditional Protestant hymns and composed new settings for them. Needless to say, these pieces are not hymn tunes that would be sung by a congregation. However, the sacredness of the hymn texts has been preserved.
The songs and corresponding movements are:
I. I Sing the Mighty Power of God
II. All Things Bright and Beautiful
III. The Heavens Declare Your Glory, Lord

Canzone for Flute and Piano is a five minute duet for the two instruments. The title identifies the piece as an instrumental composition that is songlike in nature. It's peaceful mood makes it a lovely interlude to any program.

This short duet for Flute and Guitar is called Beguine because it captures the rhythmic accompaniment used for Cole Porter's Begin the Beguine. The guitar part plays this accompaniment pattern for the majority of this composition. It's a very catchy rhythm and I have used it for years to help my piano students bring vitality to their playing.

St. Peter's Suite for Solo Cello was commissioned by cellist Myron Schwager. Dr. Schwager has been my music professor while I was an undergraduate. However, at the time he was on the faculty of Hartt College of Music in Hartford Connecticut. As a result, the premiere took place in Hartford in St.Peter's Catholic Church. Knowing this ahead of time, I found the hymn tune: ST PETER in my Presbyterian hymnal. (The words often used with this tune are In Christ There Is No East or West). In keeping with this hymn tune, I composed each movement using a section of the melody as a motive. This piece was very well received and has been performed subsequently.
I composed St. Peter's Suite for Solo Cello in 2001 and its duration is 13 minutes.
The four movements are:
I. Tango
II. Lament
III. Swing
IV. Chorale and Chaccone

Sonata for Organ was composed in 2001 and is a nine minute work.
It's meant to be performed on a pipe organ.
The idea behind the composition is to provide a church organist with the instrumental music that is customarily played at three specific parts of church services in Catholic, Episcopaland Lutheran churches.
There are three movements which indicate the places in the service for them to be played.

II. Offertory
III. Postlude

This composition was commissioned by the duo of Liz Leehey (clarinet) and Sarah Tenney (marimba). They gave the premiere at Tufts University in a concert that included works funded by the American Composers' Forum. 
I enjoyed every moment of writing this piece because the sound of marimba as well as its interplay with the clarinet made me feel like the notes were dancing.

Three for Three Duration: 12 minutes

Three for Three was commissioned by the Strung Out Trio in 2003, these three master musicians were living and teaching at the university in Cyprus. Although the violinist and guitarist were husband and wife, often performing as Duo 46, they wanted a piece to include the pianist colleague.
The challenge for me as composer was to find a way to negotiate the delicate balance between the guitar and the piano.
Both of these instruments are in the same musical range and without a bass, can cancel each other out.
Nevertheless, this piece shows a variety of instrumental textures and colors.
The movements are:

Psalm 121 started as a piece for a cappella choir. It was commissioned by conductor Pierre Masse for his ensemble, the Ecclesia Consort, to sing in two performances in 2002. Since this psalm was one of my favoites, it was a great joy to compose this piece. It's 4 & 1/2 minute duration was dictated by the psalm text itself since I set every word to music.

Fast forward 20 years, I realized that this composition would work beautifully for saxophone quartet.
As a result, this arrangement follows the a cappella setting quite literally.

After composing two saxophone quartets in the 1990s for the Berlin Saxophone Quartet which they played several times, baritone saxophonist Friedemann Graef commissioned me to compose this piece: Three Psalms for Tenor Saxophone and Pipe Organ. When I asked him about why use the tenor saxophone, he explained that his role in the quartet as baritone saxophonist had no bearing on his desire and ability to play other saxophones. Since this composition included the pipe organ, I chose to create a work that reflected the sacred nature of church.
The movements are:

Several years ago, I composed a suite called Five Short Pieces for Clarinet and Marimba. It is published and available here as Sheet Music Plus. Ever since that time, I have enjoyed the sound of the marimba and so when I was arranging this Excursion, I explored the combination of clarinet and marimba. Surprisingly enough, the third instrument ended up being the piano, which was the original instrument of the composition. It's a fun light-hearted piece and I hope you enjoy playing it.

As with my other Excursions, No. 6 was composed during the second half of 2023. In addition, even though the core of this piece began on the piano, it quickly became clear to me that a saxophone quartet would be the perfect ensemble to express my musical ideas. The duration of this pieces is just under four minutes and moves rather quickly. The reason for the title Turnaround  is because the bass line (shared by tenor and baritone saxophones) is the jazz version of the I-vi-ii-V chord progression. The jazz version of this includes several chromatic passing tones and the saxophones do this very well.
