Three of them (2, 3, and 5) are two-part echo-canons, where the imitative voices begins very soon after the first one (two beats later in each case here). The other two canons, based on pre-existing texts, adopt the more common structure of following a chord progression that proceeds over several measures (albeit an irregular, 7-measure, elided phrase in Le Rêve).

Supreme was one of Robbie Williams' hits in year 2000 from the album Sing When You’re Winning on the label Chrysalis Records.  It is possible that it took less time to put this song together than the legal teams needed to negotiate the distribution of royalties because it contains two interpolations, or re-recorded samples from other works. The more familiar of these is the bridge, interpolated from I Will Survive (by Dino Fekaris, Frederick Perren) first sung by Gloria Gaynor. The other is the main string riff, which is interpolated from music to the 1970 French-Italian film Dernier domicile connu (Last Known Address) composed by François de Roubaix. The rap section after the bridge is replaced with an excerpt from this. Otherwise, this arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonalities as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. As with so many others of his pieces, this suite was mainly written for his own performances. At the time of its composition Popper was still married to Sophie Menter and at the peak of his solo career. Besides the obvious similarities to the works of the Strauß dynasty, the musical language of Richard Strauss can already be found in Popper’s Waltz Suite. Like Josef Merk’s Valses Brillantes, Op. 6, the work is a series of waltzes framed by an introduction and a virtuoso finale which are linked by a mutual theme. This newly typeset edition provides two cello parts: one with Popper's original markings, and one with performance suggestions by Martin Rummel.
