I have composed six preludes for piano that present interpretive challenges for the pianist and evoke diverse emotional responses from the listener.     I was inspired by the improvisatory nature of the short pieces that were common in the Baroque era that often threaded rhythmic and melodic motifs into a tapestry of sound.   And I was particularly influenced by the spirit of spontaneity evident in the sets of short pieces composed in the Romantic ear that often dramatically played out for a particular emotional response. In 1956, he recorded the notorious version upon which this arrangement is based. Notorious because he didn't even remember recording it and the single was banned from many radio stations.  I Put a Spell on You didn't even make the charts but still sold more than a million copies and is considered one of the greatest Rock and Roll tracks of all time. It all sort of just fell in place. I found out I could do more destroying a song and screaming it to death.This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. In this case, since standard notation has certain limitations, it is recommended that the 1st violin and viola players listen to the original track to find out how their notes were performed and work out their own interpretations. Strillato means ranting-ly, screamingly, but a mere word is not enough. The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students. Waaa-aa-o-oo!
